Kids at wedding

Kids at wedding

I'm not really sure how to politely say that I do not want kids at the wedding. I want to keep it like.. ages 16 +. Is anyone else doing this? It's tough because I have a big family with LOTS of little ones!

i'm not having kids either-the only one is my flower girl. I'm putting just the peoples names of whose invited..like mr and mrs smith, rather than the smith family.

We are having an 18+ wedding. Honestly, we made it very clear from the outset that kids were not invited. We also had 'adult reception immediately following' printed on our invitations, in case there was any confusion. FH has lots of nieces and nephews, for us, it would have created a zoo to have them there.

I am not having kids at the reception. Its at night and I just don't think it will be good to have little ones up late without it being a disaster. I am going to put on the reception card Adult Reception. I'm sure I will get a few calls about bringing kids but I'm sticking my ground

you have a lot of time still ..i would talk to each parent as it comes up in conversation about the kids coming to the wedding so its not total surprise or confusion when the invites go out. most parents with young kids want a night out for themselves. i was not invited as a young kid and was always so upset. so i am allowing kids/letting it be up to the parents. mostly we have kids 12 +. we only have 8 under 12 (3 in the bridal party) and 3 babies.
years and years ago kids were always invited - it was and is a family occasion. people say kids are no longer invited because its an adult affair but i think it stopped a few years ago with the price of weddings (but kids are usually free or half price) so i don't know, depends how u see it. most people are used to weddings being kid free these days so it shouldn't be too hard. it gets messy though- i could go on and on about this because i just did my invites though. u just need to know your guest list - u can't say 16+ when the 16 year old has a 15 year old brother and it may be hard if the 16 year old has a first cousin who is 12 and really loves weddings.
i am not inviting kids i dont know unless their parent wants to bring them which then, i am going with the flow.

good luck!

Re: Kids at wedding

Thanks everyone this helps alot! Initially we were going to invite all the kids which is ALOT, but I was convinced by MOH and my mother not to. At the end of the day I decided to keep the kiddies at home. I am only having the flower girl/ring bearer stay for the reception if their parents want them there. I will consider the other kids under 16 on a case by case basis. Maybe I won't even set an age, I like the idea of 'adult reception' on the invitation. I think it gets the point across and everyone who has a question about it can just call me.

I have the same problem...huge family and 20 first cousins who range from 5 to 45 years old (who now have kids of their own).

I decided that I am inviting all of my first cousins and anyone over the age of 18. Also, anyone who is traveling from out of state can bring their kids (the ones from OOT are actually my ring bearers and flower girls too).

This was a tough decision since I hate to exclude people bc growing up I was always the kid who wanted to go but wasnt allowed to, but its too expensive and the list has to be cut somewhere. GL!!

whew bunny bears you're making me nervous...but ur absolutely right. I'm not doing kids, i think a majority of people will understand...and the rest of them that don't explain to them that it's because of money...oh well if they can't understand that.

We are not having any children at the wedding besides my 2 nieces (flowergirls ages 4&2), and his 3 nieces (who are all sisters, ages 5, 10, 17). That is where the children list ends. As far as anyone else's kids, they are not going to be invited. We couldnt NOT invite my brothers little girls and his sisters 3 girls...

I would suggest that maybe you see if your parents can casually spread the word ahead of time throughout the family about no kids being invited. This way it's not such a shock to people when they get the invite. I'm sure people will talk to your parents about the wedding, so maybe when your parents are discussing it they can talk about where it is, how many people are invited, and then say something like yeah they've limited it to adults only for the wedding because it's soooo pricey, or something like that. Then when doing the invites, obviously address the envelope to only those people you want invited, and also do the 'adults only reception'. But I think casually spreading the word ahead of time is a good way to get people used to what's going on and gives them plenty of time to find a sitter and not sit there questioning you when they get the invite if it's ok to bring kids or not.

I am definitely in the minority with this topic...
Why is it so horrible to have children at a reception? It's not like you will be responsible for watching them throughout the night. I have a neice and several nephews and I couldn't imagine them not being there!!

My opinions aside..
If you don't want children at your wedding, then you just have to come out and say it. Maybe write 'Adult Reception' on your invitations. Also, most parents don't want their children there anyway! They might want your wedding to be a night out without the kiddies. They might not be as insulted as you think.

i dont think i will do kids at the weddings either since ...he has 5 uncles who each have 5 kids .... thats already 25 kids ... and thats not even including the rest of his or my family ....

Re: Kids at wedding

my feelings on this is if you are having children in the bridal party fg rb ect... and they will be there for the reception i think it's rude to not allow other children.

I myself have not attended cousins weddings for this reason. I am not going to get a sitter for my daughter to go to a wedding. Especially if it is a family members wedding my daughter is as much a part of the family as i am. if she is not invited i will not be attending.

When asked we just told people it would be no adults. On our Reception card it said 'Adult Reception'

People will ask if they can bring their children, they will ask you, FH, your parents etc. Just make it clear and dont bend for anyone.

Re: Kids at wedding

we are going to be putting adult reception to follow, we are only having the FG (ONLY bc she is FH's daughter) and ONE of her cousins who is 10 - (which she even has a younger sister who is 2 - only inviting the older one) - which the parents arent even crazy about they dont want either there but are going to do us the favor because we just need to keep the FG occupied - everyone else is over 18+

the only kids we're having are our flower girl/ring bearer. and even at that, i'm not sure about that. if at all possible, i'd rather have our dog serve as both

Re: Kids at wedding

we still dont know what we are doing. We would rather not buts its a really hard decision to make. Our flower girl has to brother who arent in the wedding party, so we dont want to offend anyone. really dont want oto make the desision lol. We were going to do like an 18 and over limit. Let us know what you decide
