****** I realized I didn't put 'maybe' on the poll...just use 'what is this' as maybe*****
What do you think of this?
Fh and I have had a few heated deabtes over the circumcison issue, and we don't even plan to have kids for years.
The reason it came up again recently is because on our favorite show (penn and teller bullsh--), they had an episode on it, and they actually showed circumcisons taking place. EW. It was SO scary.
My take on it is that it's barbaric, it's completely uneccesary and it causes under strain on a baby. They're now saying that there's no medical reason for it (just take a shower!), and I just can't see removing it for no reason. I'm not going to go into surgery to have my appendix out if it isn't enflamed. Should I also have my newbors undergo tonsilectemies? I mean ONE DAY it MIGHT be a problem....To me I don't understand the purpose of it. Also, some people say it removes 25% of highly sensitive skin, so it also takes away ptential sexual pleasure, etc etc.
I know this has been a long standing religious tradition for some 'cutting' the covenant. However, there is a LOT of really barbaric stuff in the old testament, and we're better off having left it behind, maybe this is one of those things that western culture should wake up and realize is barbaric and uneccesary...
What are your thoughts?

Re: Kind of a parenting questions, but CIRCUMCISON
We haven't decided. Once we know what we are having I am sure it will be a discussion. DH is but I know he isn't 100% certain he would want to do that to our son.

Re: Kind of a parenting questions, but CIRCUMCISON
We are waiting on the arrival of our little boy in the next 2 weeks, so this is a very real issue for us. DH is totally against having it done to our son. I on the other had have no real reason for wanting to do but that it 'looks' better.
Like Marymoon said there's no real medical justification for doing the procedure, so I can't really make a case for it. We are most likely not going to circumsize our son. I just pray that later in his life that he doesn't have problems and have to do it when he's older. I heard that it's really painful if done later in life.

I ABSOLUTELY WILL...
It may not be for any real medical reason but i had a friend that was 'not'. And he said it was always embarrassing for him...And he wished his parents had done it when he was a baby.... He had it done when he was 25.
It may be a cosmetic thing but so is pierced ears, tattoos, plastic surgery...things commonly done today.
I think not having it done does effect the average american male's self esteem and would have it done!

Mikes sister has 4 kids. Her last one was finally her boy. I am Riley's Godmother. My SIL and BIL decided not to have Riley Circumcised. There is no mediacal reason... But it goes a lot further then 'just take a shower' You have to really make sure it is cleaned. My Mother and Father IL gave my poor SIL so much greif about it. There was some article in the paper from a long time ago that they found online talking about how it COULD help cause cancer for their partners. They printed this out and gave it to her. I mean how embarrasing. Im not sure what I would do. But Its up to the parents and no one should give their .02 cents in. So I would have to say maybe.

We're having our son in a month and we have decided to circumcise him. Daddy wants his little boy to look the same as him. The doctor says they will give him a local anesthesia so there will be little pain.

I have sat front and center to many a bris in my life time and it is not traumatic to the baby at all. They cry because they are naked and cold, NOT because they are in pain.

Re: Kind of a parenting questions, but CIRCUMCISON
yes... I think it's important for a kid to 'look like other kids', for self-esteem issues, AND I think hygiene plays a huge part as well.
I know several mothers of uncircumsized boys that had to deal with infections during the infant years, and one guy who even had trouble during his HIGH SCHOOL days, because although he took the proper amount of showers, he kept having infection problems and had to be circumsized at the age of 19. NOT pleasant!!!
Besides the fact that I HATE looking at a manpart that isn't circumsized...its just not 'normal' to me...

I had a boy in December and I did not have him circumcised. IMO I do believe that while it may be easier to care for afterwards I can't stand the thought of making the decision to have my son get cut anywhere unecessarily. But most importantly my DH is not circumcised and I believe that since he will be my son's role model they should look alike. I wouldn't want my son to question why he is different from his daddy. Personally, I do not find one less appealing than the other.

Circumcision is largely an American thing. My DH and most Europeans are not. He's never had any hygeine problems - I mean really it requires minimal extra effort, and one would think men would be concerned about cleanliness whether they were circumsized or not.
The biggest reason not to circumsize, IMO, is sexual pleasure. Whether on one's own or during intercourse, the foreskin allows the penis to move easier...
But then again, what do I know! What we need to do is find a man who was uncircumsized as a child into his teens and then circumsized later on to find out which was more pleasurable!
ETA: DH won't let me circumsize our future sons...!

Re: Kind of a parenting questions, but CIRCUMCISON
I'm probably not going to win the debate with FH, but I said if it IS done it has to be done in the hospital, but a doctor. He didn't like that either. To me I just can't see cutting off parts of a newborn's body for no reason. I know this has a different purpose, and IS different, but how is it any different at its core from female genital mutilation? We're cutting off 'useless' parts of the body.
I never really thought about the self esteem issue, but the thing is, the only reason for not being circumcised to cause a self esteem issue is because most people are circumcised, not because there's anyting wrong with that. I mean if everyone on my daghter's class had blonde hair, and she's a brunette, she might have a self esteem issue over that, because blonde seems more acceptable or favored, but it doesn't make it better, and if the pattern stops, and not everyone is circumcised, tehn the kids who aren't won't be anomalies.
Actually, I think I've heard that circumcision is becoming less common. When we were born it was a foregone conclusions, but now more and more parents are examining the process and making it a decision rather than a given. We're so used to circumcision as a culture, but if you think about it, I mean really think about it. Here's a brane new, healthy new born baby...let's cut off part of his genitals...it's really horrifying to me at least.
All that having been said, I don't have THAT much experience with men, and my FH is jewish, so I've never even seen an uncircumcised penis...

Re: Kind of a parenting questions, but CIRCUMCISON
This is a good question!
I dont know what I will do come the day we have a baby boy(if we have one) I know my future Hubby was cut and I like the look of it.
He insists if we have a baby boy he wants him to be circumsized as well. Not because the baby boy will know he is different than his daddy, I mean it not like he will know he is different. FH doesnt intend to show him his willy, but because he feels most boys have gotten it and he just doesnt want him to feel out of place once he becomes a teenager, etc.
I dont know what I will do, but on a side note I just found out that neither of my two brothers where circumsized! I never heard of them ever being sick or having infections or needing to go to the Dr. etc because of it. I was told they never had a problem ever.
So Im in the middle. One thing I do know, if a small paper cut in my pinky hurts, cutting off a large piece of skin of a baby's willy has GOT TO HURT! I mean I dont care how many times you have witnessed it, its got to hurt. Unless you have used anesthesia then thats another story, two different scenarios. Ofcourse it doesnt hurt then(hopefully) but what about once the it wears off? Its not like we talk to the baby and he tells us what he felt and for how long?
I can tell this is going to be a big deal for me once my time comes along. Gladly thats a few years away.

DH is not cut, so our sons won't be either. DH has never had a single problem with infections or being made fun of. He also believes that even if he was cut, our kids still would not be. That for a boy to look like his dad is a little crazy, how often are you looking at your dad's thing to feel different?
DH also says no one is taking away his kid's love glove, and it is there for a reason. My SIL just had my nephew cut and the job was botched. Too much taken off, then tried to fix it, now we have to wait to make sure what does grow back is not constricting.
All over the world men are uncut, and they are not infected.

Re: Kind of a parenting questions, but CIRCUMCISON
We had Jeremy circumsized because my DH is. I was in my hospital room when they did it. I heard him cry for about a minute then it was over and he was brought to me. About an hour later you would never have known anything had happened to him.
My ex-boyfriend was not circumsized. In the beginning of our 'relationship' it was weird because I had never seen it like that before but I got over it. I dont think he ever had any 'problems' with it. He just had to make sure he washes.
My neighbors son isn't circumsized. She said its fine when they are little but when they turn 4 they need to pull back the skin to learn to wash. Not a big deal I guess.

That would be my concern. It may become more common for guys to not be circumcized, but I wouldn't want my child to feel weird about it.

omg Janice, it looks like we are married to the same man. maybe it's a puerto rican thing. We are also not doing it to our son since we really don't see a reason for it.
