We're going to his families house and its going to be really wierd. Its our first Xmas that his parents are aware of our engagement, also our first big family get-together with all of them. That means I can't avoide the pictures, and their going to be questioning us on the wedding and be asking me if I can't wait to have a new last name... I feel really uncomfortable about it.

Word of advice. Tell them what they want to hear. Sometimes it is worth it just to keep the peace. Then do what you want when the time comes.
(By the way, I told FH to tell his mother that he was going to take MY last name and that we were BOTH going to hyphenate just to ruffle her feathers - he wouldn't do it but man imagine the look on her face if he did? PRICELESS!!!)

I have to say - I thought that was going to happen to us - and we got maybe 1 or 2 questions early in the evening, and that was it!!!
It helps when there are babies and children at a function - they are a lot more fun to play with then wedding plans!!!

I hope it doesn't go as badly as you say, hopefully they think before they speak. For the most part, I politely tell my FIL's 'we'll see' 'that's something to think about' 'heck no, he's taking my last name!' and I keep it light. It works and I have FH say 'no' or whatever for me. This is what we feel works for us, maybe it'll work for you. Good luck!

I didn't want to bump the thread unless someone else did. So thank you girls. It went surprisingly well. The only time the wedding was even hinted at was when my FILs asked us how things were going, and they were pushing for info on the wedding and my FH stepped in and said that we were taking a break from planing and enjoying the holidays. It was then dropped! They were very nice this yr. We showed up very late (My FH wishes,) and they were worn out from midnight mass, morning mass, and the Xmas Eve party that we weren't invited too. The party ended early and very little was said. The only other time our wedding was mentioned was when my FH aunt (by marriage) very nicely told her mother that we were getting married next yr, but thankfully the woman wasn't really interested. I know we got of easy!

Only one weird thing, people didn't talk to us very much. I think my FILs told the other family memebers not to bring up the wedding and people just didn't want to slip or didn't know what to talk about. I feel bad for that. But sadly I'm greatful.

Glad it went well- my family is going over to my FMIL house for dinner- that should be fun! We all have to learn how to handle our FIL's at some point, unfortunately!
