I have IBS. Such fun!
It's awful but easy to manage. When I was first diagnosed there were no medications other than OTC Immodium. Now there are prescripition meds, which I don't take, b/c I have been able to use a combo of breathing excercises and watching what I eat.
Have you seen a doctor? I recommend going to a specialist, not just your primary care physician. Try to reduce stress through excercise, yoga, breathing techniques. Watch out for foods that might exacerbate the condition.
ETA: Stay away from dairy products as much as possible!

I have it and have had it for many many many many years now. It really sucks!!! Lets just say I know where every bathroom in the mall is!! But seriously, I have it really bad. I have been hospitalized four times for it, missed numerous days of work because of it, have had 7 colonoscopys, 2 exploratory surgeries, been on every drug possible and nothing has helped!! I've done special diets, taken extra fiber, everything under the sun!! I am due to go back to the doctor to see if there is anything new to try! Oh and I also get SEVERE panic attacks because of it!! I believe there is a new drug on the market now to elp treat the symptoms for it, there is no specific cure for it. I have been told it is caused by stress, worrying and such. I am a huge worry wart and very stressed person, so it only figures I have it. Let me know if you need to know anything else!!
ETA- Definitely go see a specialist in gastroenterology!!

ME! If you have any questions ask me. I have IBS and am lactose intolerant. My father has colitis so I have to keep being tested for that. SO far there is nothing the Dr.s can do for me. Changing my diet has helped a lot. The books 'Eating for IBS' and 'IBS: The first year' both by Heather Van Vorous both have helped me alot. You should get them and read them. She also has a website Here it is There also is a tummy support thread on here somewhere... I bumped it but here is the linm just incase. Here If you need anything I am here to help!

Thanks so much ladies. Your advise has helped. I never realized that this was such a common problem. I am hitting the book store today. I will update on the prescription I was given once I pick it up (still waiting for doctor to call it in )

Can I ask you girls a question? I think my FH has IBS, but not sure..he hasn't gone to a doctor yet. We know he is lactose intolerant, so he takes pills before he eats anything dairy....but his stomach is constantly in pain-after eating pretty much anything, and he is constantly popping pepcid and stuff like that. It's weird because the pain is always either top of the abdomen or very low, never in the middle...would you possibly classify this as IBS? I want him to see a doctor but for some reason he's being really stubborn.
Thanks in advance, FM me if you'd like!

I think I have the same meds... does it dissolve on the back of your tongue and taste like peppermint> If so, it doesn't work for me.

I've been on it... everyone is different - but they didn't help me. They actually made me pretty drowsy.

I have IBS and I could talk for days about it.
I am 75 years old in a 25 year old body.
It is a disability. I've tried many treatment modalities.
Only recently in the last 10 years have I been really finding out what helps me best.
CPIBS!

i have the same things as you and i also have colitis. it is the worst thing to deal with it but after having these problems for so long and going to every doctor in the tri-state area and them telling you there is really nothing we can do .... you just learn to deal with it
after a while you know what foods you can and can not eat and stay away from them
i have to go for colonoscopys every 6 months its not fun . and for them to tell me there is nothing we can do makes me so mad
they can cure a common cold but cant find anything for this !!!!!

I have it and it S U C K S!!! I've only tried 3 or 4 meds, and this was a while back, but nothing helped and I just got frustrated and gave up. I've found that certain foods bother me at times, and then they don't.
Has anyone found lack of sleep makes it worse? It does for me, but not sure if that's common.

I have IBS and spamsmatic bowel too. I take Pepcid and another prescription that my Dr just gave me. I used to take Zantac for 3 years but that just stopped working so my Dr gave me new meds to try.
