Anyone register for knives, only to find out that people consider it bad luck as a wedding/engagement gift? FH and I were so excited about the ones we put on our list, but no one seems to be interested in getting one. It might be early, but I like cooking and was looking forward to getting some...

Re: Knives on your registry.
This differs amongst ethnic groups. The man at BB& B who was helping me (the knives were behind glass so he had to open the cabinet so I could scan) said that I would only get them if people waited to the last minute. Apparently he thought, a lot of people might wait until right before when everything else is taken on the registry and they have no choice but to get the knives. It made sense at the time. He was wrong though one of my Henckles knives was one of the first engagement gifts I got.
I could be wrong but most Italians think it is bad luck but not necessarily other ethnic groups.

Never heard of that. We registered for them and got them for our shower. I heard that you can't open anything with scissors or a knife that day.

With the knives I think you would have to give the person a penny or something. A fiend told me that since he's really into knives/swords and stuff.

I registered for knives, and someone purchased them. I'm a confessed registry peeker.

That is true. A penny for each knife. So that way it is not bad luck. At least that is what I've been told.

I think I was told it's bad luck to give someone a knife but the penny somehow absorbs the bad luck, or something like that. I guess so that way it's like you're 'buying' it.

Hmmm, very interesting...I have them on my registry- I actually can't wait for someone to get them. But, for my engagement party, before I registered for the ones I wanted, my 'ex'- SIL bought them for me right before she started cheating on my brother- and by the way, she practically disowned me when I didn't ask her to be a BM. She is 100% Italian- is she trying to get me back?!? LOL

this is all so strange to me---
never heard of it, but i could see how you wouldn't want to buy someone knives. they're kitchen knives though, not samurai knives or something, right?!

My grandmother believes yu shouldn't get knives as a present...so if she gives someone knives she asks for a penny in 'payment!'

Re: Knives on your registry.
yes...i have heard of that and me and my family as well as my inlaws believe that. it is bad to get a knife as a gift. and the myth is if you do recieve a knife as a gift you must give them some type of money to remove that bad luck...might sound stupid but we follow it.

I had to laugh out loud on that one. I thought it was only bad luck in Judaism to give knives. Then I come to find that the bad luck comes when you OPEN your gifts with knives and scissors. THAT is a no-no where I come from. You have to tough it out and open things with your bare hands!!!
