Been to both. I'd choose San Francisco. Lots of reasons why - Wine Country close by, a more laid back lifestyle, not all the hustle and bustle of hollywood and the like. More like New York - at least IMO.

I Left My Heart In San Francisco...literally! I lived there for 3 years (actually in a suburb of SF), but it is BY FAR a superior lifestyle to LA. LA is not a pretty town...too many oil wells and industry and oiy, the SMOG. Ick. The only upside to LA are it's beaches. But, the SF Bay area has beaches too, you just have to bundle up to go to them! Brrrrrrr.....

Definitely San Fran!!! It has a much cozier feel and the restaurants are fabulous!!!!!!

I am thinking about going to California for and Vegas- but I probably can't go everywhere. I want to go to LA for all the fun stuff, but San Fransisco looks fun, too.
I have never been to SF...but it seems like a coold place to go...
if you are going in the winter months Id do LA...warmer...but thats my cold bone speaking...
I'll add a spoke to the wheel...
my fave CA city...SAN DIEGO!!

yabboybay makes a great point about time of year...SF is nicest in the fall and spring (though I have to say its gorgeous here today - sunny and 60) BUT winter months generally tend to be rainy and summer months tend to be foggy and cool.
Was this for a honeymoon? I'd say SF is a lot more romantic than LA, but there are fun things to do in both.

to live in .. definitely frisco or right near it. but to visit, i'd say LA more. especially if its spring/summer time. theres just so much more in terms of outdoors stuff like beaches. FH loves southern cali .. his dream place to live would be san diego. plus, with frisco theres just frisco .. but if you go to LA you get LA, san diego, santa barbara, etc.

ugh, I cringe at 'frisco' - sorry sonia.
Also, there's Napa, Sonoma, Sausalito, Muir Woods, Santa Cruz - there's plenty in the surrounding area. Its much more than just San Francisco.
It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to go to the beach - LA wins hands down.

edited to say: wish I were there NOW!! I don't care that it's not 80 degrees...it's not SNOWING (we're getting up to 12 more here in DC...AND FH is in San Diego as I type...ARGHH!!)
