So the dress I am thinking about buying is an all lace dress by Watters with scalloped edges.
The thing is, I am short and small in the bust, so i know it will have to be taken up and in. I know having the scalloped edged will make it more complicated (and costly) to alter since you have to remove the scalloped edge before altering the lace itself.
Watters makes another all lace dress, without the scalloped edges (and a slightly different neckline, which is no big deal to me). The shape of the dresses are the same (even though it doesn't look it in the pictures). But because there's no edging, it'll be easier to alter...and it's something the FMIL can do (for free).
Do you think there's a big difference in the two dresses? with scallop or without? Or should I save some money and get the one that I can get altered for free (unfortunately, money is an issue for us)
(sorry this turned out to be so long!!!)

Re: Lace alterations...help!
OMG I LOVE your dresses, i have very deep emotions towards lace dresses, lol. i completely love both dresses and if the non-scalloped edge saves you time, frustration, worry and money, then i say go for it, either way the dress is beautiful.

Re: Lace alterations...help!
my dress is all lace over satin and when i ordered it they showed me how the alterations would happen,
the entire lace hem comes off - they cut what they need to and then reattach the hem - im not worried about it

My dress has a scalloped edge on the bottom and is all french lace. The salesperson in the store advised that I order it custom length for that reason and that it would save me $ in the end.

Yes....my dress has beading on the bottom so they are going to special order the length for me so it will not have to be altered from the hem. Ask them if they can do this for you. HTH

yeah...unfortunately, Watters doesn't do hem to hollow custom lengths...so they all come as the same length.

neither does maggie sottero but the saleswoman showed me exactly where there is a 'break' in the fabric where they take off the scalloped edge and then sew it back
