Lactose free formula and breastfeeding... some questions.

My son is now 1 month and 1 week old and he is rarely happy. I thought there would be at least some happy moments throughout the day, but he is usually miserable. I called the doctor today and they said I should switch to Lactose Free formula as the first step..... then soy if this doesn't work.

My questions:

1. I breastfeed him every other feeding plus supplement a bit (when I go back to work I will probably not be able to pump, so I don't know how much longer it will continue or if I can keep up my supply to at least feed him at night).

What foods should I be avoiding? If my son is possibly lactose intolerant, are there foods I should definitely avoid? The doctor I spoke with said I should have a strict diet and eat only grilled chicken, potatoes and turkey.... pretty much everything else was on the list of do not eat.

Can you give me suggestions as to what I can make for meals that will be safe for me to eat?

2. If I do happen to have a glass of milk occasionnally or something where I think I should not breastfeed, how long does it take to get out of my system?

3. Should a baby over a month old have some happy time or am I over-reacting? His schedule is get up, eat, maybe NOT cry for 20 minutes, then fuss and cry until the next feeding. Is this normal?

I would talk to your dr. about the foods. MY daughter had to go on ALimentum and he said if I was breastfeeding I would have had to watch every single thing I put in my mouth! and live on card board and water, hopefully you are not as bad as me, I stopped supplementing for that and other reasons but he did say everything would have affected her stomach so I would ask your PEdiatrician b/c in her case I would have had to have little to no protein! different from the lactose but she couldnt have that either.

All babies fuss but he may be colicy to so I would check w/ your dr. they say the SOY and alimentum help w/ fussiness too

My suggestion is to call a Lacation Consultant. Why are you supplementing now?
I guess I feel that if breastfeeding is going well that is 100% better than formula anyday. You may have to cut out diary from your diet but I would be shocked if you cannot eat any fruit or veggies at all or bread type products.
A professional LC would be the best person to help you...often better than a dr. since many dr are not really trained about breastfeeding specifically.
