Ladies with FH's in Law enforcement?

Original post by futuremrsreilly

FH is a Trooper he worked all weekend on night shifts (upstate - I don't see him for a few days when he works) and I haven't talked to him at all today...I just called him and he picked up and said 'hey babe I'm processing a drunk right now let me call you back' Damn drunks ruining my goodnight call!

Any of you gals with Fh in law enforcement or Firefighters can relate I'm sure (or any profession that has non-traditional hours)...He's working Thanksgiving too Sorry I am a complainer but I'm new at this...he only graduated the academy in June...Any advice to get over the lonely holidays?? I mean I will be with family for sure but its not the same, you know?

My FH isnt in Law enforcement but he works for DSNY (sanitation) he works mixee hours especially around the holidays and when it snows i never see him. It gets hard especially like new years when everyone is kissing people and u stand there alone but its his job and i dont really have a choice but to get through it

It's hard and it's something you have to make sure you can do for the rest of your life. I've been through bad schedules and some good ones (knock on wood) but in the end you have to make whatever you are stuck with work for you. I was miserable when FH worked midnights sliding schedule and then right before he was finally getting some weekends off they changed his squad to one that just finished up their weekends off. We went like 14 weeks (I think) without a weekend off and I thought I was going to go off the deep end. But an assignment came up that works really well for us now. We only really see eachother Fri night and Saturdays but that is a happy medium for us. It's steady at least son we can make plans and most events do take place those nights. He gets to do his stuff fridays I get to do my errands sundays and we have eachother on Saturdays. WOuld I like to see him more, of course, I'd love to cook us dinner together every night but his schedule doesn't allow it so we make the best of what time we do have. FM me any time to vent or ask questions. I don't know too many people who really understand what we go through. And I hate always being alone on NYE =(

FH has been NYPD for the past 17years...He used to have great hours 6am to 3pm. Now he decided to go back to 4-12 shifts with the wedding and all. I see him in passing when I come home for lunch, but thats about it. He works every new years. We try to make the best of it, by having our weekly 'date night' every friday evening when he comes home even if its 1am and we do have the weekends together. I'm kind of getting used to it. I would probably be a little more uptight and nervous if he was out on the streets still, but he is a Sargent/firearms instructor and works at one of the shooting ranges,so I don't have to worry sick....I know he is safe....Every now and then he does work some overnighters which I welcome since we have to save money now :) Only when there are big events where he does have to work details I usually won't see him for a week...I really can't complain since alot of you girls go days without seeing you FHs. Hang in there girls :)

My father is in the law enforcement, so I grew up and got used to the whole situation of not having him around for the holidays and being worried every night not knowing if he got hurt. Fh is not in law enforcement, but I am on the waiting list to become a police officer. My true desire is to become a detective one day. FH and I have spoken about this and he seems fine. I guess I will not truly know until I'm actually in the field (hopefully soon!)

My FH is in the NYPD and its real tough at times... I work days and he now works nights and some weekends; sometimes we only see each other for 10 minutes here and there, for like 6 days... sometimes we don't see each other for a couple of days at all... and we live together! We really only get to spend time together on Sundays, and on Monday nights... We've been together for 2 years and have not spent a new years together yet, and likely won't this year either... It ***** going to sleep alone at night, and takes alot of adjusting when he goes from being on vacation, to being back at work and never seeing one another... He only has 3 years on so we know it will get better though... Plus, he REALLY loves his job and also the missing each other sure keeps our relationship real fresh! You really never get sick of one another, and always look forward to seeing one another!

Oh no is this what I have to look foward to?? FH is waiting for the call from the NYPD to go into the academy..
I just thank goodness sometimes that the economy is bad & they have been cutting the size of the academy classes so he hasnt gotten the call yet. I know I'm pretty selfish and a bad FW, lol but I don't want to be lonely all the time while he's out fighting crime and I want him to be safe. I like the job that he has now much better!

My FH is also waiting to get called into the academy. He was all processed and then they started to cancel and cut classes. I feel like he has been waiting forever but it probably has only been a little over a year.

thats exactly what happened to my FH as well. He went through all the processes and then that was it, no more calls bcuz of the budget cuts. it really *****, its like a waiting game!

Hi girls, sorry i have been ***...crazy few days at work! After getting home so late I had so much to do around here that I didn't get a chance to pop on to LIW (for the first time in a while!). Anyway, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate all of your comments and it is nice to know that there are fellow girls out there in the same situation. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Have a GREAT Thanksgiving everyone! I know I will have a couple chances for turkey since we'll have a redo on Friday so FH can have a chance to participate in the festivities.
