Last night we threw out all our food because the fridge was not working at all and the food was spoiling. The freezer defrosted itself, we were losing all our food...I had to do an 11pm run to my parents to save our frozen food.
FH calls the landlord this morning and tells him we want a new fridge...the landlord tells us to call the freakin repair guy again!!! WHY am I having him come back when he didn't do his job the first time??? This fridge is older than dirt...I don't trust it! I'm not gonna spend another $100+ on food to put in THIS fridge because I can't be assured that it won't punk out on me again!!! I'm telling FH all this and I'm telling him he's gotta call the landlord back and tell him...I would do it myself, but they are first generation Italian and I really have a very hard time understanding what they are saying...FH understands it just fine. How am I supposed to have a conversation with the guy when I don't understand him???? FH says he wants to wait for the repair guy to come again. WHY??? I don't care what he says because I'm NOT buying more food to put in that fridge!!!!
WHAT THE FRICK?!?!?!?! I'm so freakin angry right now!!!
UPDATE: The stupid repair guy came again. Whatever he did fixed it some more, now its only 45 degrees and not 65...still not cold enough for food, so whatever. We're going out tomorrow and buying a fridge and putting their junker in the basement. When we move out we'll take the fridge with us. My parents have had a spare fridge in their basement for years and it really came in handy so I'm not unhappy to have an extra fridge for the house we'll own in the future.
Either way, I'm getting a new fridge, and when we move out the landlords will be fcked because the one we have now is like 25 years old and BROKEN. Whatever, not my problem.

i wish i had an way to solve this for you... try asking the repair guy if he can talk to the landord and tell him its unrepairable

can you tell your landlord that you'll call the repairman IF he promises to pay for your food bill if the fridge breaks again? get it in writing

FH told him we had to throw away all that food...and his response was to call the guy again. I am so furious, this is totally unacceptable to me. Of course, now that there's nothing in there it got down to 36 degrees...I just crammed a whole bunch of crap in there...dishes, my crock pot, the quesadilla maker, a bag of stuff leftover from my GM's birthday last week...I'm willing to bet the fridge will not stay that cold.

I had this same issue! LAst year, when exFH and I were still in the apt together, the fridge broke twice! Twice I lost all my food, and had to it was a nice amount of money in the garbage. The fridge was God knows how old, but the landlord just wanted to fix it. The fridge would be cold again for a few months, then it would happen again. After the second time the repairman even said it would keep happening and wasn't worth it to fix. It broke for the third time in April. Landlord still wanted to just 'repair' it. Ex-Fh( who is still on the apt lease ) actually stood up for me and told landlord this was just unacceptable at this point. He finally broke down and bought a new fridge! Good luck, I know it's a PIA!

He just hung up on me!!!!!!! He's sitting there trying to explain to me why the fridge isn't working, talking to me like I'm a damn idiot...I told him I didn't give a flying eff WHY it wasn't working, but I wouldn't be happy until we had a new fridge so he should get on that....and he says 'Yeah, because I'm the one who broke the damn fridge!' and HUNG UP!!!

whats the fridge problem? my sis had a fridge issue at her old apt....and it turns out that the apartment's electricity was just wired REALLY BAD
so anytime they put on the A/C in the summer, the fridge would stop working
so, the problem was never w the fridge. it was with the wiring
the landlord didnt want to fix that (too much $$), so he gave them a small fridge that was able to work with the A/c on
...when did the problem start?? since it got hot and you plugged more things into outlets??
just a thought...

The fridge won't get cold enough...I'd say you're right, but last summer we had the a/c and fans running and everything was fine. The fridge is just older than dirt and needs to be replaced and it seems like nobody but me realizes that...whatever, I'm done dealing with it. At this point if the landlord won't replace it then I'm just going to start sending him my grocery bills instead of rent. I'm sure as heck not gonna pay for more groceries on the likely chance they will get ruined again.

haha omg do we have the same landlord? the SAME thing happened to me and i had the SAME communication issues. we threw out hundreds of dollars of food. i even went so far as to complain to the grocery store that their food was spoiled! i didn't realize it was a the fridge at first because it would run and be cold a lot of the time it just that it was shutting on and off and i didnt know!
i ended up calling a repair guy (our fridge wasn't that old so we hoped for repair). they charged me $400 for a new part and i took it off of the rent.
