how long does it normally take? should we go as soon as they open?
birth certificates + drivers license is all we need to bring? (+ $40 cash?)
We will bring our passports too....
I've read conflicting info about passports being able to substitute for the birth cert -- any truth to this?
anything we should look out for or expect? we need to do it right because we want it done with tomorrow

Re: last min marriage license Qs
it's 40$ check of Money order... when I called to make sure of everything they said NO cash. Definately go earlier so you are not rushed (i'm going next month) but I have called the office twice.

If you're going to Brookhaven I think you can bring cash or check--I know some other places only allow a money order.

Re: last min marriage license Qs
We went to the one in Manhasset right when they opened at 9am. There was no one there, we were in and out in 15 minutes.... as long as it took us to fill out the forms and for her to type it up.

If you're going in the city it's only $35, but money order only, they may possibly take ccs now (they didn't back in March) but def. not cash. And you only need one form of ID.

Re: last min marriage license Qs
We went for ours recently. I brought my passport and FH used his drivers license. We had our birth certificates with us but they never even asked for them. We went to the office in queens and they only took money order or credit card - no personal checks or cash.
All you do is fill out a form, pay for the license, and verify that the information going on your marriage certificate is correct.
It took about an hour.

Re: last min marriage license Qs
yeah i was told no cash also so we had to go get a money order.
Where i went they only needed a drivers license, no birth certificate but thats more common in the 5 boroughs from what i see. In LI i notice is when they ask for it, so not sure about the whole passport thing but you have all 3 so should be fine.

Re: last min marriage license Qs
does it seem weird to anyone else that each place does things so differently? wouldn't you think this would be a little more consistent between areas?
I'm pretty sure we will have everything we need for any possible contingency and hope to get out pretty soon -- this is the one thing we 'left to the last minute' because we had no way of doing it earlier within the allotted window. I can relax once this one thing is taken care of because you actually need this to get married, and you dont need favor placecards or table numbers for that.
thanks for the responses
Edit: called town of Hempstead and:
- hours are 8:15am to 4pm - the guy said he'd take passport and license but isnt really supposed to and it's better to have birth cert, which is what they are supposed to ask for - they take cash
