Latest Indency Flap!

Latest indecency outbreak: Atlanta
The 'Regular Guys' morning duo on Clear Channel's WKLS-FM Atlanta has some explaining to do to management about how mics were left open during a stop set Friday morning and listeners heard visiting porn star Devinn Lane go into her act. For now the DJs, Larry Wachs and Eric Von Haessler, are suspended while management investigates.
Here's the story of how a really dumb idea turned into an on-air disaster. The show's in-studio guest was Devinn Lane, a porno movie star. Under Clear Channel's new zero tolerance policy for indecency, the DJs decided they couldn't present an adequate depiction of her talents on the air. So they came up with the idea that they would record Lane doing a few porno lines during a stop set, then play the tape backward for interested listeners to record and play backward to hear the porn. It's doubtful that would have passed muster with either the FCC or Clear Channel's new policy, but we'll never know since things didn't work out as planned.
The studio mics were apparently left in the program channel, instead of audition, so the porno lines went out over the air, along with a Honda commercial. At first Lane is hard to hear, but as the commercial reached a softer spot, some of her most raw comments got through loud and clear.

RBR tried to reach Clear Channel Radio-Atlanta Regional Vice President Pat McDonnell Friday. Instead, all we got was this statement from his office: 'We are conducting a swift and thorough investigation of this morning's WKLS 96 Rock broadcast. Our preliminary understanding is that a microphone was left open accidentally during a commercial break. The on-air personalities known as 'The Regular Guys' are suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.'
RBR observation:
And how much better would this have been if things had gone as planned? Not much. The 'Regular Guys' were apparently trying to figure out a way to get around their employer's new rules, rather than complying with them. Had they actually recorded the porno bit off-air as planned, then played it backward for listeners to tape and replay the right way, it appears that would be an indecency violation as well. After all, they were announcing that they were going to broadcast indecent material and gave specific instructions so listeners could hear it. We presume the FCC has engineers who know how to play a tape backward.
