Lawyers or doctors or so on

Lawyers or doctors or so on

thishas to do with name change

I graduate from law school and take the Bar before i get married - it will all be on my last name

My FH wants me to take his name and i want to legally change it - the problem is i want to keep my maiden name for work

Can you still sign you maiden name on legal documents or be sworn in under your maiden name when it is not your legal name anymore?

How about a hyphen??

I'm in a similiar situation. I will be getting my teacher certification right before I get married and it will be in my maiden name. FH wants me to take his last name, but I think that is going to be a lot of name changing. My solution is to hypenate it..and use my maiden name for work (which is easier to pronounce) and my married name for everything else.

Hi,

I think you can keep your maiden name as your professional name. I'm graduating from med school before I get married and I will also be keeping my maiden name for professional use, but plan on taking my FH's name for all other aspects of my life. I think it's the best for us, but everyone needs to find that happy medium

I pan on asking some female physicians I know about how they handled the name change aspect of marriage. If I found out anything useful, I'll pass it on.

At the last law firm I worked at (I'm in gov't practice now), the head partner used her maiden name at work and her husband's last name for everything else. . .

Are you saying you have to get re-sworn in just to change your name before the bar???

(I didn't know this)

you can legally make your maiden name your middle name. I think this makes it a little less confusng just in case you have to fill out some kind of paperwork regarding direct deposit, etc. This way, you don't look like two different people in the records department, but you still have the flexibility to dop the married name when dealing with your clients.

I like this option if you're choosing to use his name. I received my Ph.D. a couple of years ago and still have not decided what to do about the name, but definitely know there's no way I'm dropping mine. So, I may just legally add his in there somewhere so I can use either (legally).

My understanding is that its not prohibited to go by different names, so you can use one last name for certain things, and your new one for others. I'm definitely keeping my maiden name as my professional name, but will probably go by my married name in most other aspects of life. I was sworn in to the bar with my maiden name, and all my diplomas say my maiden name. Once you are sworn in, you don't need to get re-sworn in to change your name with OCA-- you just have to fill out a change of name form-- you can do it online.

i can't drop my middle name - it has a lot of meaning to me

I work at a small firm so- that my paycheck and tax information could me to one name and work under my maiden name without too much trouble

You can use any name in you want in New York - so long as you are not doing to commit a fraud on anyone. I am changing my name to my FH's name and making my maiden name my middle name. It is easy for me since i dont have a middle name now. So for work it will be my maiden name - but everythign else my married name.

I graduate medical school the week after we get married. I will have my last name as my middle name and change my last name to that of FH. Went back and forth about this, too. Here's a new question...we are both graduating and will be doctors so do we get announced as 'Dr. and Dr.------ -------'? I say no b/c first of all, we will not have had the actual graduation ceremony yet and two, I prefer to keep things in my personal life separate. As long as they do not announce us 'Dr. and Mrs.---- -----'!

Once you have completed your program of study and have met all requirements for graduation, I believe you can technically hold the title that your degree gives you even though you may have not passed your boards.

Walking through a graduation ceremony does not solidify your achievements. As a December graduate from grad school (a gazillion years ago), my graduation was snowed out. We had it the next day but I don't think I would have been denied my right to be a Master of Education.

As for your title as a couple. I think if you are both doctors, you can be introduced as either 'Mr and Mrs (insert groom's last name)' or if you choose to use your professional titles, 'Dr (groom's first name) and Dr. (bride's first name) followed by the grooms last name if you are using it.

Why not leave off the titles altogether-- introducing 'Jane and John Smith'?

Re: Lawyers or doctors or so on

I was a practicing lawyer before I got married. This is what I did with my name change after I got married.

I changed my last name to husband's name on the marriage certificate.

All personal things (credit cards, bank accounts, SS, driver's license) I changed to husband's last name.

At work (in-house counsel), I changed to my husband's last name for all HR/legal stuff - payroll, insurance. But I use hyphenated last name on my letterhead/business card, telephone and at work in general.

With the NY State Bar, I changed my name to use a hypenated name: [Maiden name]-[Married name]

Hope this helps.

I think Mr. & Mrs. sounds better than Dr. & Dr. even though it is a great accomlishment, it just sounds to 'professional' for a wedding.

I was actually told by a woman at the dmv that even after I get married dont change your drivers license because if you wind up getting divorced it's a pain to change. What a well wisher huh? She said she's been married for over 25years and never changed the name on her license or bank account.

theres only 1 problem with that if your using a joint credit card and your married name is on the card and they ask for photo id and your license has your maiden name you cant use the card. that actually happened to a woman in front of me in office max to card said to ask for photo id and she had it but different name they wouldnt except it!! the credit card company said not to accept it the store manager was going to let it go through but was told not too!!!

Re: Lawyers or doctors or so on

be careful if your license is different then your real name if you are flying

also with children and you are flying out of the country, if the mother has a different last name then the child, the mother has to have a signed letter from father stating she is the childs mother - (i think may have to be a notorized letter)
