Legal Domestic Partnership?

Legal Domestic Partnership?

Now that FH has his own place, we're thinking of entering into some kind of domestic partnership so that I can share his benefits, etc. We're going to have both of our names on all of the bills. Is there anything else we need to do? Is there some kind of official form to fill out? Does anyone know/has anyone done this? Thanks!

My Mom did this with my Stepfather and he was under her benefits for years and then all the sudden boom the insurance company said they will no longer recognize it. So my Mom and Step-dad went and got married for real and now the insurance company might sue them for all the years that they had a domestic partnership. They had an official certificate and everything. So just be careful with it.

im not positive but i believe that you would have to be living together and sharing the bills for at least 7 years. I am not positive though

it depends on your insurance company/employer.

When we were in SF, I had Al on my policy. The only requirement was that we lived together for 6 months prior to putting him on the policy.

I think its a lot more common in CA though. Many NY companies don't offer insurance for domestic partners.

(we didn't need both our names on all the bills. The 7 year wait thing is for common law marriages, I believe. And they're only recognized in a few states. I'm pretty sure NY isn't one of them)

Domestic partnership laws are mainly for same sex couples now. I am pretty sure you cannot share benefits with your FH under this in NY state. We looked into it here and in MA, and both states told us unless we were the same sex, we could not share benefits. And I think a common law marriage in NYS is actually 15 years, or WAS. My dad's friend and his now wife lived together for 25 years and shared all their benefits and what not, and then they changed the laws, so they had to get married.
