Legal Marriage/ Church wedding

Legal Marriage/ Church wedding

So my FH just accepted a job for the summer than can lead to something permanent (and better than his current job) this Fall. Thing is, he won't have medical insurance for the summer.

We decided to legally get married so I can place him under my medical insurance. (I already pay for a famly plan for me & my son)

My problem is... Does anyone know if I can still get married in a Catholic Church?

Do you know who I would CALL? (We don't belong to a parish at the moment because we just moved, and have no clue WHERE we will get married)

In my mind, I'm not married until a priest does so in a church, with me in my wedding gown etc etc. But for our future, its best we get a marriage license now considering the situation.

I'm concerned, because I know it is a BIG DEAL for my mother that I am married on the alter, in a Catholic church.

i am NOT 100% sure BUT i dont think this chnages anything with the church. . .your priest just won't have to 'witness' you signing the marriage license. . .the entire ceremony will be the same.

My FBIL got married by a minister outside and now they have three kids. . . when they went for the baptisms, the priest asked them to get married in the church ( which they turned down) so i think you should be fine!

I was going to do this also (FH has no insurance) but I just couldn't get used to the fact that we would be legally married but still living with our parents lol

hahah well, we live together so we're pretty much a married couple.

I won't be changing my name or telling anyone besides my immediate family and close friends that we are REALLY married. But yeah, we're going to do it within a couple of days.

I'm a little excited!!! lol

if you are legaally married the church usually dosent reconize it because they dont see it as a marriage in the church's eyes. I dont think you will have a problem getting married in church after you are legally married.

You always do have the answers to religious questions, well at least when its about the catholic church.

You may have to do the ceremony as a renewing of your vows. i am not sure how it would work!

actually you will have to get your marriage anulled through the Tribunal and that can take up to 3yrs. for this to happen. You wilh have to appear in person and kinda go through a trial. you may not have time to get this done. The only to find out will be to call the the Archdioese (sp?) in Rockville Center. & they can help you

I'm almost 100% sure that you will have no problem getting married in the church after being legally married. My fiance and I just asked someone who is VERY religious about this and he said it's fine pretty much. And I know people who have done this, but I don't know all there details.

I believe you only have to get your marriage annulled if you were previously married through the Catholic church.

You can 100% definitely get married in the church even if you are already legally married by the courts. You do not have to get it annulled. My aunt got married in 1979 or 1980 at City Hall and then in the late 90's decided to get married by the church and had no problem. Also, one of my friends a few years ago got married at city hall for similar reasons, didn't tell anyone except me and the priest, and had absolutely no issue getting married the next year in the church. HTH!

you sure can get your marriage annulled in the catholic church.. but it is a long process. trust me this happened to me during my wedding planning.. where I was planning on getting married in the catholic church.. and couldn't b/c we would'nt have enough time to go thru the tribunal. I am not catholic but DH is. We ended up getting married at a non-denomination church.. best neutral decision I made throughout the wedding planning!
