Legal Question re: Name Change
I am going to take fi last name. I do not have a middle name and would like to keep my last name and just use it as my middle name. I do not want to hyphenate (sp) , just move it so it will become my legal middle name. Is there anyghing special I have to do for that, or when I do all my name changes, just put that name in as middle name on any forms. Is it o.k. to do for ss # etc?

Re: Legal Question re: Name Change
Sure is, make sure that you do SS first and then everything else should be a breeze, at least this is what I was told.

Re: Legal Question re: Name Change
OOH yeah, A while ago someone posted that when they went to SS they put down first name, last name (as an initial), New last name (also wanted the old last name to be new middle name) she said that when she went to DMV to change it they would not let her use the whole name since she did not put the whole name on SS. The point is, just be consistant about it.Gosh, I just read this post and even I am confused as to what I am talking about, please feel free to email me if you need clarification.

Re: Legal Question re: Name Change
My sister did the same thing and I think she just went to SSA. I plan to do the same thing, so we'll see in about 2 months!

Re: Legal Question re: Name Change
I think this is related to the topic, so I'll ask. For anybody who bought the name changing guide they sell in bookstores, are they worth it? Or is it easy enough to change everything on your own? Thanks!Jacki

Re: Legal Question re: Name Change
I have a middle name and this is what I am doing. My hubby already has a hypenated last name so I cannot hyphenate my name with his name so this is what I am doing. My Old name: Jane Sue Doe
New name: Jane Doe Brown-Blue
I dropped my old middle name of Sue and made my maiden name my new middle name and just took on my hubby's last name in its hyphenated form.
I purchased the name change kit from this site, it seems very easy to use but as we do not have the marriage license back from the county clerk's office we cannot get started on it.

Re: Legal Question re: Name Change
I had a middle name and decided to keep my maiden name as my middle name and take my hubby's last name. I just dropped my middle name in favor of using my maiden name now. For SS purposes, you can do anything. I spelled out my name on my SS application as followsTrish MaidenName HubbyLastName
All they told me was this was how I had to file my taxes.
No one else gave me any ta-do about having my name that way. To keep it short, I just used the initial for my middle name instead of spelling out my maiden name. That way people don't think it's hyphenated.
However, the DMV gave me tons of doo-doo over it. They basically told me I can't 'legally' take my maiden name as my middle name, that I needed a court order to do so. When I said I had done it with my SS #, the DMV lady told me that was federal and DMV is a state office. In the end, after a lof of arguing, I just didn't use any middle name or initial on my license.
As someone said earlier, if you do use your maiden name as your new middle name, either spell it out all the time or use the initial all the time.
