Legally Changing your Name

Legally Changing your Name

If I get the position that I'm hoping for, they offer health insurance, which my FH pays out of his own pocket, almost $400 a month, which is way more than he can afford at the moment. If we get legally married, so that he can be on my policy, but I don't want to change my name yet, until we are married in the church, next year, how would I go about that?? Do I have the option of legally changing my name to my husbands a full year later??

I believe so...nothing really happens until you change your name at social security office

I think you can add him as a significant other.

We did this actually. Got Legally married in May because I lost my job and FH got a new one with amazing benefits.

It is very easy to change your name - but you do not have to change it to have benefits - you must provide a copy of your marriage certificate.

For us - I decided to change my name because my entire life I was teased because of my last name and JUMPED at the chance to change it sooner lol.

To change your name with SS you either need to got to the office or mail your ORIGINAL marriage license (request 2 copies so you have one just in case when you do get married) drivers license / passport and social security card.

To be honest - all of the legal stuff was easy - what has been hard is the judgement of people who do not understand why we are still having our wedding :(

do you live together and have for at least the past year? if so, he can qualify as your domestic partner and get your benefits. you'd just need to submit paperwork including proof that you've lived together for at least a year and he'd qualify.

New York passed a law as long as you live together 6 months you can have him under your insurance. You do not have to get married till the actual big day.

You have to check with your employer if they offer the domestic partnership option. A friend of mine at work had a similar situation and our job does not offer benefits for domestic partners they had to get married. She changed her name right away at work but left her drivers license the same so that people who would give her crap about still having the wedding, like Lindsey is having problems with, wouldn't know.

Lindsey I Think it's great that your still having your wedding you still want to have your day and to celebrate with the people you love!

Problem is we won't be living together till after the wedding. The legal marriage would just be a formality to allow him to be on my insurance. My parents would have a panic attack if FH and I lived together before our official church wedding. Thanks ladiess!!!!!!!!

THIS, we did this we my FH lost his job. It was quite easy to do. I did not have to change my name (I'm not any way), and had no issues. If you live together double check 1. your town's rules, and 2. the company rules for health insurance. We were able to add him during non-enrollment time because us becoming a domestic partner by the town qualifies as a change in life circumstance (like birth or marriage) so it was as of that day. I will warn you though most jobs tax it differently than if he was your husband. make sure you change it as soon as you get married! You can FM if you need other info.

We did this and we are not married yet. NYC didnt even ask for proof. His license says where he lived three towns ago and mine says my house where we live. IT was so easy it was scary. Doesn't work for evryone definitely, but it helped out my FH.

Thank you. We are calling it an affirmation of our vows and having the wording on our invites say 'To Celebrate the Marriage of'. I am Jewish and Justin is Catholic and in his faith / family the marriage isnt even recognized unless it is done by a priest - and for me, the Rabbi blessing the wedding and the traditions are so important.

Yes we are married legally - but to us the wedding is the 'seal' to make it official in they eyes of our family and friends.

But unfortunately - there are still jerks, like my MOH who say 'you are already married Lindsay, so why do you care so much about this wedding' I have no one throwing me a shower, no bachelorette party, nothing a normal bride gets and it really just breaks my heart :(

I can't believe that!! You made a decision to make your life better by getting health insurance during a hard time (I'm sure losing your job is a hard time-I'm going through that right now) and people are actually saying things like that to you? Are they not throwing you shower/bachelorette parties as a reflection of getting legally married beforehand???

And btw I absolutely agree that the wedding in front of family and friends is what really matters!!

Well, I believe it is more of a process to change your name if you don't do it on your marriage certificate.

You could always take your husband's name on the marriage cert, but NOT go to DMV and SS office. You could do that later on.

That makes me sad. If my friends or family said something like that to me I think I would be heart broken too.

If they don't come around before your wedding I'LL take you out for bachelorette drinks!! Every bride deserves to be celebrated at least a little.

YUP. Makes me sad One of my bridesmaids actually messaged me asking if my MOH was treating me any better - she is ok - by no means is she a good MOH or even a slightly OK MOH - but she is also perpetually single and might just be holding that against me?

So sorry about that!! Maybe they'll surprise you with something...or maybe one or your other bm's will take charge if it's mostly your MOH who is not making it special. Either way, I'm sure your wedding day will be amazing with or without her support!!

At least there's 2012 bridal shower!!
