Length of Engagement Reactions

Has any of you 09ers ever get the reaction 'WHY SO FAR AWAY?! when you tell someone you're getting married in 09?

I've gotten that plenty of times. So has FH. To be honest, there is NO WAY I'd be able to get married next summer. Too much planning! I know people who have planned a wedding in just a few months but I couldn't even imagine doing such a thing. Plus, a long engagement will give us extra time to save money.

Actually most people told me they thought we were waiting the perfect amount of time...but that may be because we have a january wedding.

I agree. I am so tired of explaining why. It is really not that long if people think about it. My brother, cousin and best friend are getting married in 08 as well, so it seemed like alot for us to do it at the same time as well. Besides we need to save money, since we are paying for it.

08er crashing... we have a 15 month engagement. Both sides of grandparents gave us the whole 'OMG that's soooooooooooooooo far away, why are you waiting so long, we might not be here'

When people say you are having along engagement right? when are you getting married? 2000 what?

i did at first. ( i got engaged in sept) but NOW everyones saying how close it is. i think theyre all insane

FH and I get this all the time also. We decided to have it in 09 because we are in the process of moving into our house and we want to take our time to plan our wedding so that it is done right. We just don't let it bother us anymore!!!

They do ask why I am waiting till 09 but my FH and I dont think we could of saved enough money. Plus the time of the year that we wanted to get married one of our friend is getting married the same month in 08 so we did not want to intrude.

Now one of my cosuin who got engagged after I did is getting married in Oct of 08

08er crashing! i will have a 2 year engagement by the time i get married..so i got the same responses! BUT..you girls are really NOT that far off...once 2008 comes..i don't think people will say much anymore..because you can technically say 'my wedding is next year'!! i know i did!

I remember one of those people that made the 'oh 2009 is so far away' comments said to me they planned their wedding in 6 months...I think maybe that used to be the norm. I could never (and don't get mad at me if thats what some 06ers, 07ers, & 08ers did) plan the kind of wedding I want in only 6 months!

I still get why so far away...and a girl I don't really talk to in work said to me the other day...it's so stupid you have the longest engagement ever...grrr that gets me so angry but I'm sure with her engagement she felt it a lot more and a lot quicker in her pockets and bank account.. I'm totally fine with it I just wish people did put a damper on it for us!

I got engaged last summer (summer of 06), and I never gave anyone a date because I really wasn't in a rush, so they all thought that was weird lolz..then I told eveyrone 2008 and they thought that was ok..and now I've changed it to 09 and they pretty much all understand because I told them its been changed due to the money issue lolz

People stopped asking me once I bluntly told them that I'm waiting till my hair grows back from chemo so I can look somewhat pretty for my wedding.

It's worked everytime!!! LOL

Boy! FH and I get it all the time.....sometimes I get soooo depressed because people look at us funny and they ask up why so long....I am sick and tired of explaining.

I wish I just would have waited until jul 08 to make my announcment

Ugh, I am so glad to see this vent from everyone.
I hate going into it, but now I just start this canned speech.

...Well, we got engaged in the fall of '07, I tried to book a place for September of '08 and after being rejected by 13 halls -after which I was looking at places I hated- and then realizing that for both of us our busy season is in the fall and we would have to take our honeymoon 3-4 weeks after the wedding, and I hate the cold so I didn't want the winter and FH hates the extreme hot so summer was out, so yes, we are getting married in May '09, I hope you can make it. You have plenty of notice.
