Length of Engagement Reactions

Has any of you 09ers ever get the reaction 'WHY SO FAR AWAY?! when you tell someone you're getting married in 09?

I've gotten that plenty of times. So has FH. To be honest, there is NO WAY I'd be able to get married next summer. Too much planning! I know people who have planned a wedding in just a few months but I couldn't even imagine doing such a thing. Plus, a long engagement will give us extra time to save money.

I totally agree... I've gotten some pretty funny reactions but I'm hoping to only get married once and I want to make sure I get to enjoy the planning process while I can! Plus it'll give us time to figure out the living situation.

me: 'well, i figured i'd give myself some time to save up $25,000.'

if i had a dollar for everytime someone said 'Wow, 2009?!' i would be able to pay for the wedding already.

i actually havent gotten that yet. everyone in my family understands why were waiting till 09 and no one has been like '2009?? why not 2008' im sure ill start getting it though.

All the time . . . and compared to others our engagement is only a year and a half. A lot of my friends waited 2 years, my FSIL is waiting 2 and a half. Plus we're getting married in January so its only a year and a month away, but 2009 sounds so far away to everyone

I'm crashing again lol...

try getting the reaction when you tell people 2010...they just look at you like you are the biggest retard in the world and say why are you even bothering to get married if your waiting that long...Ummm hello...2010 is only 2 years away so people should just get over it lol.
Isnt the typical engagement a year and a half anyway?? So whats the big deal if you add 6 months to the average...

People dont really give me that reaction... think about it, 2008 is in a few weeks so after that passes we can just say we're getting married next year!

It does get annoying. I just tell people that say comments like that: if you'd like me to get married sooner by all means pay for it then lol..

08er crashing... we have a 15 month engagement. Both sides of grandparents gave us the whole 'OMG that's soooooooooooooooo far away, why are you waiting so long, we might not be here'

FH's grandpa (who is in great health and works on a farm) wrote this on our wedding website guestbook:

I know... the only solace was that I know he's just joking around, he's a goofy guy. If he was sick though it would be really upsetting. It still makes me a little nervous.
