less-traveled reception venues?

Original post by weddingbunny

I'm having some trouble finding a reception venue... my fiance and I had actually decided on Fox Hollow, and I took my parents there yesterday, and they really just didn't like it... Now, if fh and I say 'this is what we want, end of story' they'd certainly let us have it there, but I really want a place that at least all the major players (ie, us and our parents) can be happy with. Problem is, I feel like I've looked at all of the more popular catering halls, and I'm just not impressed... I want something with a less commercial feel, and without all the glitz and crystal chandeliers a lot of these places have... That's why I liked Fox Hollow, because it felt a little more toned down than a lot of other places... but my dad is right that it's certainly a bit commercial... Anyway.
So, does anybody know of any more unique and less popular catering halls in/near Huntington? I'd really like to stay as close here as possible, since the ceremony will be here (South Huntington) So far I've looked at Fox Hollow, Carlyle on the Green, Oheka, Cold Spring Country Club, Thatched Cottage, and Watermill. We need a place that can hold about 200 people.

(oh, and as a ps - it matters if my parents don't like the place because they're paying for it, and while in the end it is my day and I should have what I want, I am personally not comfortable with asking anybody to pay $35,000 for something they really just don't like. So, I want to at least make sure I exhaust all my possibilities.)

thanks!

edit: thanks for all the suggestions! I'm really starting to get ideas.
Just as a note... I've already ruled out the Huntington Harbor Club because I had my Bat Mitzvah there, and it certainly is beautiful, but I want to leave it with memories of my Bat Mitzvah and find somewhere else for my wedding.
thank so much though!

I think Chateau Briand is exactly what she isn't looking for....

Larkfield Manor in East Northport. The service and food were excellent and it didn't have that factory feeling like some of the larger reception halls do. They only do two weddings at a time - one large (up to 300 i think) and a small (up to 100).

I am biased if I say Riviera in Massapequa but if you are having more than 150 it gets cozy. Have you thought of Bourn Mansion?? My cousin's wedding was there not too long ago and it was WONDERFUL!!
Good Luck!! I am sure it is tough to find something to please everyone but really it should be you deciding this and too many cooks spoil the pot i think that is how it goes. Again, Good luck!

Timber Point Country Club in Great River (South Shore, about 25 minute drive from Huntington). I had my ceremony in Greenlawn and the drive to Timber Point wasn't bad. We loved the hall because it was elegant yet not too fancy. Our wedding was amazing, we had a few people tell us that this was the most 'spectacular, magical' wedding they have ever been to.

Lands End. Really low key and classy.

I agree - that is why I picked it! Not overly done - minimal wall decor.

Also loved Bayview House at Capt Bills - although I'm not sure how many people it holds. It was very minimal decor, but a great water view. I loved it

Not to mention really great service and food. I was there for a wedding not too long ago.

We have a birthday party there for Sunday... Is it a dressy place or will a pant suit be fine... (I'm a silly girl that is worried now b/c people have weddings there )

If you're both Jewish, consider a Temple wedding. It's worth looking into.

Have you looked at The Bourne Mansion? That's where our wedding was, and everyone was floored when they walked in.

Um, OOOOOOK. It was just a suggestion. I'm sorry YOU cannot justify it. However, we COULD.

oh I didn't mean for that to sound the way it did... Sorry, actually I loved Bourne Mansion (from the pics & description in Wedding Sites & services), but FH was the one who brough up the 'site fee being unjustifed' we're paying for our weding ourselfs, and we're also house shopping so we have to make every dollar count...

I'm sorry if I offended you, I just read my reply and realized how short it sounded,

Your a lucky you have a spectacular wedding

I am not familliar with LI geography but some of the places we saw are that I think are near the area you want include:

Milleridge Cottage

Floral Terrace

North Ritz Club

All had reasonable pricing and no site fees (unless you count $500 ceremony fees).

I guess I just took it the wrong way. It must be all of these damn pregnancy hormones! No worries!

ETA: You will have an amazing wedding WHERE EVER you choose to have it. It's all about what YOU bring to it, not what a hall is going to give you

I agree. We looked at 20 reception halls and we fell in love with Lands End. Even though it is a half hour drive from our ceremony, we knew that is where we wanted my reception.

Best of luck on your decision.
