So, how did everyone figure out how they were going to split the holidays this year?
For me it was actually easier than i expected... since my mom always does Christmas Day, we decided to go to his family on christmas eve and then my family christmas day.....

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
We have been doing the split for years...
Christmas Eve with my family (it is always been a huge thing for us)
Christmas with his family
The only that is different this year is we will not be seeing my parents at all on Christmas We used to see them in the morning before we left (we lived with them) or when we got home. Oh well -- part of growing up!

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
It's annoying, but last year we did his mom's house for xmas eve and my family for xmas day. His family opens presents at midnight. This year we are going to my sister's for xmas eve, going to his mom's house by 11:30 so we can open presents that night and than spending xmas with his family...which makes me sad a little, i've never not been with my family for xmas. With the baby next year though we are both thinking we will host xmas so that we won't have to travel back and forth!

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
i cant wait to have a house so we can host....
christmas morning we go to DH's aunts for breakfast, i think its stupid but its a family thing that he 'HAS' to go to, i went last year and now since we are married i have to go again i like staying in my pajamas and opening presents and eating breakfast together on christmas morning not waking up and getting ready to go to someone else's house where its crowded and everyone is yelling - oh well....
then for christmas dinner we are going to DH's sisters house - its not too bad - not really the food i like, so i starve.....
then for desert we go to my aunt and uncles
holidays for me are kind of crappy, my parents and sister arent here so even when we are with my family its not the same - and we spend a lot of holidays with DH's family and although i feel comfortable and fit in, its totally different than the way holidays used to be when my parents lived up here....i dont know, its just totally different, so i cant wait until we have our own home and our own family and we can have holidays at our house, cook the food we like, and have our own traditions
cant you tell im excited this year?

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
xmas eve: dh's sister's house then our friend Jon's house (two blks away from each other) then we get home around 1ish to go to bed wake up around 7, open our presents then go to my parents to have breakfast possibly open presents again then to drive to southold to my bro's to have dinner, open presents. If we do not have time to open presents at my parents then we do it on Friday.
My only fear is when dh and i have kids down the road because we can't do all of this traveling.

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
Ok I am a major B I T C H! Also, we live upstate so we see his family everyday. We did Xmas with his mom and her family last night, tonight with his dad his family, and xmas eve with my dads side, and xmas day with my moms side. (My father passed but my parents were still married and DH parents are divorced so there are way to many places to go to). Also, I told DH since he knew me I will never give up XMAS with my family. Maybe things will be different once we have kids and then we prob will do our own thing but really I dont want to do our own thing. I want to be with my family! Is this wrong?

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
ugh, it has not been easy.
we have decided to spend christmas eve with DH's family and then Christmas day with mine - but we will still open gifts at his parents house on Christmas morning.
He is all pissy b/c dinner on Christmas day will not be the huge Italian masterpiece that he is used to from his family. I tried explaining that its not about the food, its about family and being together but he doesnt get it. To keep him from biotching I told him I would make Chicken Parm so that he has something he loves to eat. Ugh, its a struggle because he was babied his WHOLE life by his mom and now he expects that things will always be that way. He doesnt want to compromise with holidays and it bothers me b/c its mostly about food - not even spending time with one family more than the other.
Dumb IMO

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
For me its feels so hectic. We do x-mas eve with my step family, x-mas morning me and Dh open our stuff then we go to his moms house and have breakfast and open presents. Then we eat dinner with my mom and step dad and my brother and open gifts with them. Then for desert we go to my Fathers house and open present with him and my Aunts. It drives me nuts every year!!!! This is the downfall of divorced parents.... So much running around to do. Cant wait to have kids because then everything will change.

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
It was so much easier then I thought to split the holidays.....
We were with DH's family for Thanksgiving, then we will be with his family for Christmas Eve because they do a really big Christmas Eve and my family has a bigger Christmas Day so we will be with my whole family Christmas Day.
We figured this will be the way it is every year, the only thing that will change is if we are with my family Thanksgiving we will be with his for Easter and vice versa. My family has a big Easter dinner with the whole family so that is why we decided to have Thanksgiving with his family this year.

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
We're celebrating Christmas Eve with my family since we have a late dinner and open gifts at midnight.
Christmas day we'll be with FH's family at his sister's house.
That's pretty much how it will stay going forward.

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
I make it easy....he stays home and I go to my moms house. It is only like this b/c we live with his parents right now. I am sure once we have to make a decision on where we go next year, it will be tough.
I will probably end up going to my moms house early in the morning and his moms later on in the evening.

it's not wrong to want to keep tradition with your family and to see certain people on certain days. but you have to compromise with DH and give up other holidays to spend with his family.

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
In November I laid down the rules. We have so many places to go since both of our parents are divorced.
Thanksgiving: my dad's side Day After Thanksgiving: his side
Christmas Eve: my mom's side Christmas Day: his mom's side Day After Christmas: my dad's side

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
OKAY
the OLD way was
Christmas eve at his mom's and then at my mom's
Christmas day at his aunt's and then my brother's and then with friends
BUT IT IS THE DAWN OF A NEW ERA!
Christmas Eve going to church and then staying with my family ALL night, opening presents just the two of us at midnight
Christmas Day sleeping in, making breakfast and relaxing until we go to his aunt's house. . . .
AND THAT IS IT! If you have a problem with it you can go SCROOOOOO. . . . .GE!

Re: Let's Discuss.... splitting the holiday
Finally came to a compromise on this!
Christmas Eve- church with his dad and sister then to my moms for dinner
Christmas Day- My moms for an early dinner then back to my house and his parents are coming over in the evening
