Lets start an Ethnic Wedding Traditions Thread
For instance (Italian) almonds should be packaged for favors in odd numbers pref. 3-5 never even and they represent the bitter sweetness of marriage.

Re: Lets start an Ethnic Wedding Traditions Thread
My FH is from Argentina. I am not sure of any wedding traditions for their country, so if anyone can offer any suggestions, that'd be great. I do plan on asking his mom, but wondered if anyone here has any suggestions. Thanks!

Re: Lets start an Ethnic Wedding Traditions Thread
I'm having Con Te Partiro by Andrea Bocelli here are the lyricsQuando sono solo
sogno all´orizzonte
e mancan le parole
si lo so che non c´è luce
in una stanza quando manca il sole
se non ci sei tu con me
Su le finestre
mostra a tutti il mio cuore
che hai acceso
chiudi dentro me
la luce che
hai incontrato per strada
Con te partirò
Paesi che non ho mai
veduto e vissuto con te
adesso sì li vivrò
Con te partirò
su navi per mari
che io lo so
no, no, non esistono più
con te io li vivrò
Quando sei lontana
sogno all´orizzonte
e mancan le parole
e io sì lo so
che sei con me
tu mia luna tu sei qui con me
mio sole tu sei qui con me
con me con me
Con te partirò
Paesi che non ho mai
veduto e vissuto con te
adesso sì li vivrò
Con te partirò
su navi per mari
che, io lo so
no, no, non esistono più
con te io li rivivrò
Con te partirò
su navi per mari
che, io lo so
no, no, non esistono più
con te io li rivivrò
Con te partirò
Io con te
------------------------
I'LL GO WITH YOU
When I'm alone
I dream on the horizon
and words fail;
yes, I know there is no light
in a room where the sun is absent,
if you are not with me.
At the windows
show everyone my heart
which you set alight;
enclose within me
the light you
encountered on the street.
I'll go with you,
to countries I never
saw and shared with you
now, yes, I shall experience them.
I'll go with you
on ships across seas
which, I know
no, no ,exist no longer;
with you I shall experience them.
When you are far away
I dream on the horizon
and words fail,
and, yes, I know
that you are with me;
you, my moon, are here with me,
my sun, you are here with me.
I'll go with you
to countries I never
saw and shared with you,
now, yes, I shall experience them.
I'll go with you
on ships across seas
which, I know,
no, no, exist no longer;
with you I shall experience them again.
I'll go with you
on ships across the seas
which, I know,
no, no, exist no longer;
with you I shall experience them again.
I'll go with you,
I with you.

I think if you're family is fluent in another language you might want to consider doing a reading at your ceremony in that language.

Maybe you could trick everyone and use some sugar instead of salt and still make Grandma happy

Re: Lets start an Ethnic Wedding Traditions Thread
THAT IS SO TRUE AMY. I AM ITALIAN AND SO IS MY FH. EVERY FAVOR THAT WE HAVE GOT ALWAYS HAS AN ODD NUMBER OF ALMONDS. (WELL FROM A WEDDING OR ENGAGEMENT). I THINK THAT IT IS GREAT THAT WE ARE SHOWING DIFFERNT TRADITIONS FROM OUR CULTURES. ANOTHER ITALIAN TRADITION IS DURING THE CEROMONY YOU PLAY THE AVE MARIA AND PLACE 3 ROSES ON THE BOTTOM OF THE STATUE OF MARIA.

Re: Lets start an Ethnic Wedding Traditions Thread
we did the polish salt ceremony at my wedding. we used rye bread salt and wine. i have never heard of honey used on bread. i can give you the instructions if you like. i think it looks beautiful and if its important to your family and go for it. i think anything different that personalizes your wedding makes it extra special and more memorable for the guests.

Re: Lets start an Ethnic Wedding Traditions Thread
could you send me those instructions on the polish ceremony too. I want to see what its about. my FH's grandfather was polish and I think it would make him happy to have that part of the ceremony. But can you just add sections to a Catholic ceremony?

Re: Lets start an Ethnic Wedding Traditions Thread
FH and I are both first generation Italian-American so we are looking forward to incorporating a few traditions. We wil be doing the five jordan almonds, I will wear green pjs the night before, we will have italian music - trying to get the latest stuff from there (dance music) and some oldies but goodies for the adults. We decided against having a dance with an Italian song but we will incorporate some of the more popular songs at the reception.Here's an interesting website: Italian Wedding Traditions

We are having The Prayer by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion.
We will have Italian and Greek music at our wedding. I am 1st generation Italian and FH is 1st generation Greek. We will be doing the 'confetti' as well... which is part of both cultures.

Re: Lets start an Ethnic Wedding Traditions Thread
Im hispanic and there are a two traditions I want to do, but I havent made my final decision yet. There's the exchange of coins, which the groom will give his bride. A couple of reasons behind this: Dowry, represents that he can take care of her, represents he trusts her wil all his worldy possesions. Then there's the lasso, which looks like a really big rosary bead chain. Its put around the shoulder of the couple in a figure eight (eternity symbol). It represents the unification of one.

Re: Lets start an Ethnic Wedding Traditions Thread
Irish...It was believed that the rings must be made of gold or the marriage wouldn't last. Even during the poorest times of the Irish Famine brides and grooms would rent gold rings just for their ceremony.
A horse shoe is incorporated into the ceremony to represent the agricultural tradition and to catch the good luck for the couple.
There are others but I can't think of them right now.
I'm planning on having shamrocks hand embroidered on just the back edge of my cathedral length veil.

Our priest is a friend of my FH's family and speaks Spanish, so I want part of the cermony in Spanish. Also, I plan on writing a little Thank you speech in Spanish and reading it at the reception!
