Lets talk about buying a home

Original post by VeggieBride

So I know a good number of you ladies already own houses or apartments already but I think a good majority of us are still renters or live at homers. So with that said do you all plan to buy on Long Island/NYC or do you plan to get the F outta here.

For us- we would love to buy on Long Island but dont want to feel like we're struggling. I feel like we're totally priced out of the LI/NYC region unless we were to buy a 1 bedroom co-op or something which we really don't have any interest in doing. So we've been looking in North Jersey and Southern CT. We both work in midtown so those are both easy commutes to Grand Central station. Either that or we will start looking out of the metro area and try to head South. DC/ Baltimore Area seems feasible or even NC.

What are your plans?

We are staying on LI. FH works for the LIRR so there's really no other choice for us. Plus, I like to be near my family.

We have been house hunting since we got engaged (July) - actually starting looking for a house before we did any wedding planning.

Unfortunately, all the talk about the buyer's market is a little bit untrue here on the LI region. We have a larger than normal downpayment, nothing to sell and outstanding credit scores. We will have no problem paying a mortgage, getting a mortgage or handling the closing costs. What is getting us down is that we can't find anything we like!

I don't understand how some of the people list their homes for $500,000 when they bought it 20 years ago for $275,000 and haven't updated them at all!

It's very frustrating. At this point, we have resolved ourselves to the fact that we may be living in my apt. after the wedding . I guess it's ok because it enables us to live off of one salary and bank the other and we will continue to throw money into the savings account!

you are also in an excellent spot. i envy you!

Wow i definitely think you're in a good spot. Congrats on owning already. If we were to stay on LI we would have to be in Nassau county too. I dont want more than an hour commute to work.

and Brooklyn Heights huh?
how i adore that area. If I could afford to live anywhere in the country it would be on the promenade in Bk Heights.

OMG Brooklyn Heights is our dream! Its just sooo expensive now-alot of his patients have lived there for over 10 years so they got their brownstones dirt cheap in the 90s. It hurts!! So sometimes when we go to dinner we like to point at our 'If we win the lotto one day' houses.

Have you or FH ever considered buying a condo in Forest Hills/Astoria? My condo is in Queens and pretty affordable. You guys could start out owning a condo and eventually sell and get a house. The down payment and all the hell you go through totally s*cks but I PROMISE it's worth it. FM me if you want advice on owning an apt. I consider myself somewhat of an expert on that area.

Don't be envious. The only reason we're in this spot is that we're 40 years old and both FH and I were too chicken to make the leap into home ownership before! Trust me, after over 20 years of apt. life, there's really nothing to envy.

Edited for typo.

We're buying a 2 br co-op for now and then in 4.5 years we're moving to NC (or that's the plan at least). We were originally moving this summer but when I told my boss, he offered me a great raise and promotion to stay for 5 additional years. FH isn't super thrilled about it but I think it was better financially for the both of us and emotionally for me so I can have my parents and family around when we're having our first kid.

We're talking about buying on LI. Somewhere in western Nassau. I want to be between both our families...his is in Queens and my mom is in Huntington.

We were supposed to see a GORGEOUS house in South Bellmore today and they cancelled the appointment on us and I'm so sad...

I have a lil story with this... one day i was super bored and feeling adventurous... and FH was being a bum... but he said ok.. we will do somethng but you pick. So I went to Google Maps.. and i decided to point at a place I've never been to and drive there. The only 2 things I used to direct my search were... 1- It had to have a cute name and 2 - Irish stores.. I figured a cute lil irish town would be cool to visit. So off we went to Pearl River in Rockland County! OMG the second we got there and drove around... I absolutely fell in love!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had 2 friends with us.. we went to some irish stores and an irish pub and hung out in a cute arse lil park there. I knew instantly we would one day live there. That day hasn't happened yet. But when we are ready to buy a home.. that's where we are headed. the Metro North is there.. and believe it or not.. it's prolly a better commute to work from up there than it is from where we currently live. So one day PEARL RIVER... Here we come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did searches too.. and I found some houses for like 400K. But I didn't go too insane looking because it wasn't the right time - since we weren't planning on buying yet. Every now and then i look around. there certainly are some houses that are insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but there are some smaller and less expensive ones too.

We live in Staten Island and still at home with our parents. This summer we are going to rent an apartment out here and then hopefully after the wedding get into a house out here as well. We eventually want to go to New Jersey but if I'm still teaching in Brooklyn, I don't know about that commute.

I would love to stay in NY. We live in a house (rented) in Woodlawn now, and I would love to go up to Westchester or Rockland. But with everything that happened to my Mom this past year, we bit the bullet and bought in Port Orange, FL. i figure its worth a shot. Houses are much better down there!!! (price wise)

property values in NY have dropped 8% bc of the recession. it's not over yet. i'm hoping to get in when the time is right--maybe end of 2009.

we are looking at houses right now and have found some definite possibilites- they may be 'fixer uppers' but we have our families to help us so we plan on buying before the wedding so we have a place to live right after the wedding! I cant wait! We both live home and have for awhile so we have the savings to do it!

We bought on Long Island, but it wasn't easy, if we had gone to North CT by fh's job we could have gotten a house twice the size. But we know we wouldn't have been as happy there.

Its a compromise to be here.

You know they are saying a whole generation is leaving Long Island, they are calling it the brain drain.

I have heard this too! I really feel like half my graduating class (I'm 24) is living with mom and dad, and the other half moved out of state.

Its frustrating bc my friends out of state are buying 3 BR 2 BA for 350 hardwood floors, granite countertops etc. and im looking at fixer-upper levits for that! vent over sorry.
