So I know a good number of you ladies already own houses or apartments already but I think a good majority of us are still renters or live at homers. So with that said do you all plan to buy on Long Island/NYC or do you plan to get the F outta here.
For us- we would love to buy on Long Island but dont want to feel like we're struggling. I feel like we're totally priced out of the LI/NYC region unless we were to buy a 1 bedroom co-op or something which we really don't have any interest in doing. So we've been looking in North Jersey and Southern CT. We both work in midtown so those are both easy commutes to Grand Central station. Either that or we will start looking out of the metro area and try to head South. DC/ Baltimore Area seems feasible or even NC.
What are your plans?

We bought on Long Island, but it wasn't easy, if we had gone to North CT by fh's job we could have gotten a house twice the size. But we know we wouldn't have been as happy there.
Its a compromise to be here.
You know they are saying a whole generation is leaving Long Island, they are calling it the brain drain.
I have heard this too! I really feel like half my graduating class (I'm 24) is living with mom and dad, and the other half moved out of state.
Its frustrating bc my friends out of state are buying 3 BR 2 BA for 350 hardwood floors, granite countertops etc. and im looking at fixer-upper levits for that! vent over sorry.
Seriously...this is causing me more stress than the wedding. I really want to jump off a tall building, hard. I wish we could leave, but FH doesn't want to leave his family, bagels, pizza, and greek groceries.

I'm going to be a lawyer in 6 months, FH is NYPD, so we are not mobile Honestly, I just couldnt leave our families even if it was possible, so i get your FH. I want our kids to be able to stop by at grandmas etc. on a saturday.

Same with my class and I'm 4 years older than you!
They have really priced people out of LI. Between the taxes, the property costs, the income taxes etc etc etc....goes on and on. Its sickening.
Anyway my appointment is back on for 245 today, I hope we like the house!

Re: Lets talk about buying a home
we are staying! YAY! we were going to move for awhile because i couldn't get a job here- i interviewed in MD & VA (i'm a guidance counselor- very competitive) but fortunately (after about 1yr and 1/2) i got a job in Brooklyn and i am extremely happy!!! FH works in Islandia and he can work form home at least 2 days a week... i hate the commute from smithtown, so we are looking to buy at LEAST on the south shore... we don't live together so we have to find something by next early october... ideally, we want to buy a house that's the goal...

Re: Lets talk about buying a home
Now I live at home and so does FH. We managed to save quite a bit as that was our goal. We are going to live in FIL's house for a little bit. Rent free so we can save even more. Then we are either buying FIL's house for half the price or buying our own. My goal is to put at least 30% or more down on a house. I want a cheap mortgage and I don't want to struggle.

Re: Lets talk about buying a home
We live in Queens and both grew up here. FHs parents are selling their house here and we're going to buy a two fam in long island with them. Thats the plan. There's no way we can swing a mortgage alone-FH is a city employee and Im not making the money I should be.
Plus I wouldnt have to drop money into daycare (when the time comes) if they lived downstairs. Im not crazy on the idea, but its the only thing we can do.

We are in the process of looking right now. We are both from Queens and would LOVE to buy in Nassau County. Prices are just so high and taxes are crazy. We both work in the city so I can't imagine us moving out of NY.

Re: Lets talk about buying a home
We actually should be signing contracts this week for a house we are buying in Massapequa park. We have been looking since June & finally found something worth it (to us). Thank God FH lived home for as long as he did cause I moved out at 20 and had nothing saved. i had no debt, but nothing saved. We have been living together for 2 years and have banked as much as we could and now have 20% and the closing costs, my advice is if you really want a house on long Island save save save

Are you in North or South Bellmore? We looked at a house in South Bellmore today (Kennedy side). It was sooooooooooo nice

We got a good deal on our house but its because it needed a lot of work. If we were not willing to do the work it would have been difficult to find a place in our price range, in the area we wanted, that was a decent size to start a family in. Its really tough. Its so frustrating when you watch those home shows and see people in Texas buying $200,000 mansions.
Here is an article from 2004 about the brain drain.
we have talked about this a lot, but we arent sure what we are exactly doing yet! i think we are leaning more towards renting a condo/coop/town house around where fh is from (the south shore). so between lynbrook, oceanside or rockville ctr we are thinking! so that is what is more in the plans for us. living rent for about 1 year and than hopefully buying our own house definately on long island, nassau or maybe even suffolk county! :) fh has been saying hed just rather buy already and thats it but i think its too much to deal with, get married and have this wedding and look for a house all at once is just too much! so i said lets just rent for a year that way we dont drive ourselves crazy and stress ourselves all with soo much at once! :) we wont have enough time to look for a house before our wedding, no way! :) and i dont want to deal with it either! the wedding is more than enough for me right now, lol!
