Let's talk baseball for a minute

Let's talk baseball for a minute

The Mets signed Pedro. Good move? Bad move? How good is he going to be? If Clemens pitches against him which one is going to knock the other one down?

The Yankees are very close to getting Randy Johnson. The big names in the rumored trade is Javy Vazquez to the Dodgers, Shawn Green to Arizona. There are still some possible snags but sources are saying the teams are really working hard to make this trade. Is this a good move for the Yankees or are they again trading away youth for a pitcher who's done?

Where will Carlos Betlran land? And how the hell did the Braves get Hudson?

Oh and I'm posting this here because it involves both teams and I didn't think putting it on one of the Mets or Yankees boards would be right since I'm looking to discuss the outlook on both teams. And off-topic because while the original post is innocent you never know what may happen in a Yankee/Mets thread.

I'm only starting to get into baseball but I think the Pedro move will be good. Hey, it couldn't hurt (sorry Met's fans ). I don't know about the other trades...

I don't mind the Pedro move. I don't love him personally but I think he is a good pitcher and can help out a bit but boy was he expensive. But as a met fan, I believe we just have dumb luck - every star we supposedly get either doesn't work out in NY or gets hurt...so let's see what happens. I also think he is great when he wants to be - part of his attitude. I hope he wants to in NY.

Randy - you know he is old but he is going to be good - barring he stays healthy of course....the yanks have the money so sometimes I think when they are done with him they can buy someone else good and not have to worry about the youth. I never thought Vasquez was as awesome as people think he is so that's not bad to me - I don't really follow Yankee prospects so I can't comment much more.

Hudson That is who I would have loved the Mets to get....go figure mets get top quality pitcher and of course the Braves get one step up. I know nothing about the prospects the Braves gave up but I am sure that Hudson is worth it.

Beltran - hmmm....not sure where he will land....I will have to read more and get back to you. Had a busy week at work and a little behind on my baseball stories this week.

How did I miss a baseball post ?? (hi Jenn!)

Well I'm very glad we (Yanks) did not get Pedro. I think he is not worth the money the Mets are paying him, and it would have killed me on many levels to see him in pinstripes. I do think from a baseball standpoint, he's better off as a Met anyhow - and I do think he can help them definitely, whereas the Yankees are better focusing their attention elsewhere. However as Nicey said, part of the problem with Pedro is his work ethic and attitude (not to mention how injury prone he is, and he'll be in the NL where he'll have to actually hit). So it'll be interesting to see if Willie R. can keep Pedro in line and the entire team happy. With Leiter gone, who was really good at keeping the team's morale high even in bad times, its going to take some work to make that organization 'one big happy family' again.

As for the Yanks - I'm torn about the Johnson 3-way trade. While I think Johnson is awesome, I think the Yankees were so desperate to have a big name in Pinstripes that they were too eager to give up a lot for him. That is ALWAYS my issue with the Yanks, that they give away their young farm talent to draw a big name for way too much $$(yes I know the Yanks have the money to burn, yet its the giving up of their young players that irks me the most).

This was the information that OscartheGroom forwarded me last night about the potential Johnson deal: (thanks , Brian!)

A source confirmed for ESPN that the teams are close to agreement on the principal players of a deal in which the Yankees would obtain the 41-year-old left-hander and send right-hander Javier Vazquez and two minor-league prospects, catcher Dioner Navarro and third baseman Eric Duncan, to the Dodgers.

Los Angeles would then send pitchers Brad Penny and Yhency Brazoban and outfielder/first baseman Shawn Green to the Diamondbacks to complete the deal
