Re: Levittown Question
I live there & have for the last 25 years...It is not a bad neighborhood...Personally we are searching for a home & I did not even want to look in Levittown. Over the years I have seen a change in the neighborhood & the people that have moved in...it just does not have the same 'friendly' neighbors as it did...I guess it is the luck of the draw...I am a result of the Levittown School District & I can honestly say, I never saw anything wrong with it...my mom is currently a teacher there & agrees that it is a good school district...
It is all about preference so you have know what you want...If you want, you can FM for more information

The taxes are high because there are a lot of perpheral programs in the School District, (Not unlike the Boces programs) like vocational training in addition to general academics.
I have many friends in Levittown who love it, and we would have looked there a bit harder had it not been for the high taxes.
The only thing to keep in mind is that Levittown does not have a train station, so you either have to go to Hicksville or Wantagh (or Seaford) to commute if you work in NYC. Also I am not sure if they have non-resident permits to park in those stations, so you may want to check that out also.
Good Luck!

Re: Levittown Question
my sister and her husband just bought a home in Levittown in the Island Trees school district - it was also under $400K and is in a very nice neighborhood. My FIL was also born and raised in Levittown - I think it is a very nice area.

LOL - that's really funny! I'll have to tell my sis that LIW is coming to get her for all the times she's teased me about it!

Re: Levittown Question
We just moved into our Levittown home a year ago and DH grew up around the corner. Levittown is one of the few areas left in Nassau where you can get a reasonably priced house. People are investing a lot in their houses and the property values are defintely rising. Every day, I see another person putting on an extension or building a dormer.
We are in the Island Trees District, where DH went to school. All his friends from there have been very successful.
I was very against living in Levittown at first, but I really have learned to love it. Everything I need is in walking distance and my house is the perfect size for the two of us. Make sure you get one that has an extension if you want a place to eat, since the kitchens are really small.
You should defintely consider it. Here are pictures of our house: http://share.shutterfly.com/action/share/welcome?i=EeGNmrZo0bPPg¬ag=1&x=1&sm=1&sl=1.

Re: Levittown Question
I had a very nice childhood in Levittown- my parents had us involved in lots of things as kids. Little League, LAC (girls' softball, I believe it's still in existence), scouting, and I took ballet and gymnastics for a few years in a program. And the Levittown pools had swimming lessons. Jones Beach was ten minutes away and when I was in high school we took the bus before we had licenses.
IMO, it was a great place to grow up because my parents were involved and wanted us to get the most out of living there. I went to MacArthur and many of my classmates have done very well. I don't live there any more but my parents still do, and they've been fortunate to have either friendly neighbors or standoffish ones who don't bother anyone. DH and I considered buying there, but we'd have to get new jobs or have terrible commutes.
There's also a very nice new Starbucks that I noticed last time I was there.

Re: Levittown Question
I worked in the Island Trees School district for a year and its fantastic... Because it's a small district a lot of things are done there that can't be done in other larger districts!!
As for living in Levittown, my only concern is that they have a higher cancer rate than other areas because the grounds in that area were primarily used for potato farms and all the chemicals in the ground aren't good...

Re: Levittown Question
If it is a factor for storage space or whatever, I think most Levitt houses don't have basements......just something to consider

Re: Levittown Question
i live in levittown too...born and raised. i grew up in island trees and loved it, now our house is in levittown district.
personally, i love the area. its a lot of hardworking people with good schools. and as its been said, people are really putting money into their houses now and many young couples are moving in.
levittown had gotten a bad rap in the past, maybe from 15 or 20 years ago....but i honestly have only heard it form people who know nothing about it and dont live there.
good luck!!

Re: Levittown Question
I rented an apt in levittown for 2 1/2 years before we moved to nj. i think levittown is a nice area. i don't know why it gets a bad rap sometimes. there are lots of young couples and families moving into the area and at least the nieghborhood i lived in was very quiet. it seems like there are less and less of the original levitt capes. so many people have dormered their houses and added extensions. i think in the time i was there 3 or 4 houses on my block built beautiful dormers. we lived in the upstairs, which was fully dormered and it was pretty big (2 br, dr, kitchen, lr & bath) so you can alwyas get a lot of extra space by adding on if you need to. i don't know much about the schools since we didn't have kids, but i wouldn't say to rule it out as an area. i think if anything the neighoborhood is improving so it might a good place to make an investment.

Re: Levittown Question
I grew up in Levittown. Went to Island Tress class of 99. I LOVE levittown. Not sure why it gets a bad rap. Honestly if I could afford a house. That would be the first place I'd look. Island Trees use to be a better district then Levittown (macgarther, division) My mom says when they were looking for houses they would always put Island Trees in the listing for that reason. GREAT area. Kitchens are small but I have seen lots of original levitt's that have dinning rooms where the living room should be and living room where the master bedroom should be.
ETA: My parents neighbors are awesome. Their block and the block that is off of theirs are all friends. Every labor day they goto Montauck and rent an entire hotel. Every month all the woman get together and have 'the birthday club'They celebrate whoevers birthday(s) are that month. And the men play cards.

Re: Levittown Question
we live in levittown and i think its fine. our neighbirs are amazing!!! they all came over and introduced themselves when they saw we bought the house. they knew we did a full gut and asked my dh if he needed to use there bathroom or needed water just let them know. the last few times it has snowed the neighbor two houses down plowed our driveway and walkway and sidewalk. i dont see people being unfriendly at all. we arent in the house yet and im living with my mom and stepfather also in levittown and the neighbors on this block are also friendly. i think that if you are looking for houses in a certain budget you shouldnt discount any area that is nice and affordable. my house was under 400,000 and has apparised for more since we bought it in september and thats without them even seeing the work just for the houses that are selling near us. edited to add that the great thing about levitt houses is that they can be dormered and made bigger and have great protential. my moms house has 5 bedrroms upstairs a laundry room and a bath and downstairs is the living room dining room another bedroom and another bath and kitchen. it was orginally a 2 bedroom and 1 bath.
