I feel like we'll never be able to afford LI, the prices here are so high!
Where did everyone buy?

Ugh! I totally agree!!! It makes me sick to see what you have to spend to get a crappy house with a tiny yard!!! I have a beautiful 3 bedroom 2 bath 3 & 1/2 acre house upstate that my parents built...runs for about $175,000!!! Something like that down here would be millions with all that land! It just doesn't make sense!!!

Re: LI Prices
we bought out east on the North shore, and we close pretty soon. I was actually ready to throw up yesterday when my co workers were telling me how much cheaper Jersey is. I thought that if you move south its cheaper... but jersey.
Even though we bought, I would leave LI in a heart beat. The prices are insane out here. My friends in other states dont make that much less, and they pay nothing for taxes, and homes.

Re: LI Prices
I live in Kings Park now but with my MIL (we are in contract on a house in E. Npt).
KP has some smaller homes in the San Remo section. When searching mlsli or other sites you may have to choose 'San Remo' some think of it as a separate area than KP proper. It's a really cute area - near the water, hilly, different home styles.
You can also find some older, smaller homes nearish to Main Street in KP. Still, they will be close to or just over 400k and they don't come up that often.
Ronkonkoma, Lake Ronkonkoma, Centereach, Selden, Coram = all have more afforadable homes (meaning you can find something in the mid 300's).
ETA: I think someone already meantioned Patchogue, and also Blue Point, which is similar to KP in that most homes are NOT affordable but occasionally one will come up that is. Blue Point is sooo pretty.

Re: LI Prices
Port Jefferson Station is somewhat affordable, and the taxes aren't tooo bad. I am in the debate now to sell, and get a bigger house, or just add on. I like my property, so we will see.

NJ's misleading - - some areas are just as bad, if not worse than LI - - - and their taxes are ridiculous too! I worked there for two years, and had to suffer listenting to them complain about the housing situation, and it really was on par with what we're experiencing on LI.

thats interesting... my co workers live in the metro park area I think. The houses they had were small - I just found it hard to believe that they could be closer to the city than we were - and get prices that reasonable. Its all so frustrating

Re: LI Prices
We bought in Islandia 2 yrs ago and paid 287,000. We have done some cosmetic work. My block is great. All the neighbors take good care of their homes. Taxes are about 6000 with the Star. The schools are not great but we figured even if we had a child here we would not have to worry about that for 5 yrs and by rhen we could probably make some $$ on this house and get a better one. It is very convenient to main rds, transportation and shopping, Right off exit 58 of the LIE.
