Limo Law?

Hopefully not to scare anyone, but as an FYI, during a recent visit to a limo company, they informed my FH and I that there exists a law that to maintain a Livery status on their insurance/license plate you are only allowed to carry 14 passengers plus a driver. In other words the 22-24 passenger SUVs are supposed to have bus status on their insurance/license plate, and if not, you run the risk of being pulled over on the day of and having your vehicle impounded if you are over this passenger amount. They said it exists on the books now, but they are going to more strictly enforce it in the near future. Has anyone else heard of this?

You may want to check with your limo companies just to make sure. I've posted this on the vendor board as well, if you want to check if any limo companies respond.

I don't want anyone stranded on the side of the road on their special day.

Re: Limo Law?

Thanks for informing
I did hear about that law from a limo company I called on the phone also. He told me the regular ones are suppossed to be 10 passenger though. I don't know what to think but we definitley have to research this subject to know what we're getting ourselves into.

Re: Limo Law?

Post from the Vendor Board:

As of right now the law that took effect as of Aug 1 is very vague and not being inforced on long island. Only in NYC do companies have to be worried. The rumors keep spreading about what the law really intales. Its supposed to be inforced to any limo over the standard 10 passenger limo for Lincoln or Caddy. For suv's the law even gets more vague... It has to be able to pass DOT standards and laws and be driven by a qualified driver with the proper license. The law hasnt been passed yet weather it has to be registered as a bus or under a certain class.

Re: Limo Law?

Tammy: LOL!! No I searched on the Nyc.gov website. And I really don't like Westlaw, I love Lexis.

Paiz: You're welcome Yeah, according to the newsletter, what they told you is not true. As long as they have enough insurance on the cars and haven't stretched it without the certification program, they're legal.

Re: Limo Law?

Wow - that really gets me.

I guess they were trying to get me to take both SUVs for the day. They said they'd be willing to 'take the chance' with us, and put a driver on the job that was on the police force, just in case we should get pulled over. And here naive me thinks they're doing us a favor. Then again, I was wondering why all these places had the large SUVs if they weren't allowed to drive them holding more then 14 passengers! I mean, what's the point then? Just have 14 passenger cars!

Thanks again, Marcela!
