I found a house that looks interesting in Lindenhurst that it on S. 5th Street? Anyone know how that area is? Is Lindenhurst a far commute to the city by train?

Re: Lindenhurst?
I am not too familiar but i think if it is south of montauk highway, it is a nicer area. I don't know about the commute.
We looked at a house in Lindenhurst (south of montauk highway) a few years ago and it was cute but i don't remember where it was.

Oh, my husband is reaaaally interested in this house if it's as good as it sounds because it's on a dock, and he just bought a boat for very cheap and loves going fishing in the summer, so a waterfront house is his ideal location. I don't care as long as it gets his mind off of moving upstate because I am hoping a commute from Lindenhurst is easier than commuting from Orange county.

If you get an express out of Babylon (which is the first stop-very close to Lindenhurst) you can be in NYC is 55 minutes. If you get on at Lindenhurst and take a local you'll be in NYC in about 65-70 minutes. It's really not a bad commute at all. I went to college and grad school in NYC and took the train out of Babylon.

South of montauk by the water? Maybe 10 minutes (probably less if you don't hit lights).

There are also semi-express trains from Babylon that make the first few stops ont he line and will have you in NYC in an hour. YOu should check the schedules at LIRR.org.

That is not necessarily true......It does depend on which part south of Montauk.

I grew up in Lindenhurst! And spent 3+ years commuting into NYC. The lindy train station is pretty good IMO. First being on the babylon is good because they have trains at pretty much all hours! Plus they run a 'express' train that makes all stops from babylon to seaford and is just about 55 minutes. I used to take that! And because its only the second stop you always get a seat! I never minded the commute from there!

Lindenhurst is a nice area - try to stay south of sunrise. The north side isnt so great. The Lindy train station has better parking then babylon.

That area of Lindenhurst is fine. Just remember if you buy a house south of Montauk, you will have to purchase flood insurance as well (and there is a chance that area will flood). I believe that area is also the Lindenhurst school district (some areas south of Montauk in Lindenhurst are Copiague school district).

Oy, flood insurance. Maybe it's not too smart to be right on the water. But it would be really beautiful to have a deck overlooking the water.

Re: Lindenhurst?
JUST another question - does anyone know how much flood insurance is? My mom said she heard from someone that it's around 6k, but she's not sure. Is it that much???

Re: Lindenhurst?
Yes, be careful by the water. DH and I drove around Lindenhurst this weekend, there are tons of houses for sale on the water. However, you had to see the flooding, all the streets are ripped up, probaly why they're for sale

Re: Lindenhurst?
Another question:
At the Babylon train station, is there any problems parking there? Do I have to pay for parking, or can I just park on side streets? Is it easy to find parking on side streets?

Re: Lindenhurst?
South 5th is a good area of Lindenhurst. We bought in Lindenhurst last year and we love it. Great community, good schools, lower taxes than eastern Nassau.
We're very close to some great villages like Babylon and Huntington which have great restaurants and bars.
I think the commute is about 1 hr and 15 min, but I'm not sure.
Getting the express train from Babylon is definetly an option but I'm not sure about parking there.
Feel free to FM me if you have any questions.

Re: Lindenhurst?
At Babylon i know there is a pay lot, i don't know how much it is. In Lindenhurst, you can park in the LIRR lots with a parking pass from the Village. If you live in the village, its cheaper. I live outside the village and the parking fee is $140/year (probably an extra $100 for being outside the village). But the lot spaces are definitely closer than the non-permit required spaces, so I pay for the sticker since i come home late some nights for grad school. So if that's important to you, you may want to see if your house is within the 'village'..
The commute from Lindenhurst is not that bad. The occasions have been few that there is a babylon express train more convenient than a train to Lindenhurst (and a Babylon stop thereafter).
We just moved there in October, feel free to FM me with any questions. Happy Hunting!

Re: Lindenhurst?
We just moved here (but are renting) & I commute on the LIRR & park on the side streets off Hoffman (by the post office). There are always spots & looking at the lots, it looks like it is just as far/close a walk. The blocks are quiet and I wouldn't worry about my car at all. I take the express in the am & its an hour exactly.
I love it out here!!!!
