I just read a handout from a tenant in my co-op that LIRR has plans to close the Mineola train station! The flyer said that we should call Assemblyman DiNapoli (516) 482-6966 and Senator Balboni 516-873-0736 to voice disapproval with this.
This is seriously the worst idea I've heard. Of course, for my own selfish reasons, it has something to do with the fact that the reason FH and I took this apartment was its proximity to the train. But, there are also lots of people who take the train to Winthrop Hospital and the Nassau courthouses, both of which are within walking distance of the station.
UPDATE: I called the senator's office and it turns out that LIRR/MTA are considering closing the ticket window on the weekends. But, I asked his assistant to clarify because she actually said they were planning to close the 'station' on the weekends. When I asked if she meant that trains wouldn't stop, she said 'no, just that the ticket window won't be available, only the machines.'

No, I wish it did though. I tried searching on Newsday as well but couldn't find any additional info.

I hope that's it! I can't imagine why they'd close it.

Just the ticket office? I thought all stations have a ticket office. Still its not as bad as closing the station.

That's what I think too. I'm going to call the senator's office tomorrow and find out the whole story. I'll let you all know what I find out. Hopefully, it's good news!

Re: LIRR planning to CLOSE Mineola station?!
yeah, that's a major station. . .it has to be just the ticket office. Which is still weird, but they have been pushing for peoplr to use the machines or buy tickets in advance online.

It's just the ticket house not the station...

Re: LIRR planning to close Mineola station?! UPDATE
Try calling the LIRR or looking online to see if it mentions anything about it.

Re: LIRR planning to close Mineola station?! UPDATE
oh, that's nothing! the offices are barely openend onteh weekend anyway.
So did the flyer-writer totally twist the truth or did you just read it wrong?

I don't think he intentionally twisted the truth, I think he was just confused. I definitely didn't read it wrong--the flyer said that LIRR was considering closing the Mineola station and it went on to talk about how this affects all of us due to potentially decreased property values and inconvenience.
In the writer's defense though, when I called the Senator's office, his assistant also referred to it as closing the 'station', which is when I asked her for clarification. I'm just glad it's still going to be a train stop!

Yeah, it sounds liek a mix- up in terminology. The railroads say 'station stop' meaning the platformed area where the train stops & 'station' means the place where the employes are 'stationed'
Us regular people call the whole thing the train station.
Still, it bugs me when people make a big fuss, without getting their facts straight.
