Listen To THIS ATTITUDE FROM MY DOCTOR!!

I switched dermatologists, and now I need my medical records from my older Derm., she wants a letter (I totally understand, they legally need a written release)..however, she wants in this letter:
1. Why I want my records (I should write the real reason...because you told me not to worry about a mole that turned out to be pre-melanoma, and removed it only after my persistant urging for 3 years!!!!)

and

2. If going to a new doctor, who is it.

As far as I am concerned, I have a legal right to those records.

Then, based on how much copying needs to be done, will the doctor decide on how much to charge me.

I understand a fixed price, like 10 cents a page or something, but I don't like the idea of her determining a price as she feels!

Thanks for the vent!

I wanted my gyno records and all I had to do was write a simple letter stating that I wanted my records. And they did it for free!

What is wrong with her

That's ridiculous!

When I started going to a RE (because I felt my ob/gyn at the time was giving me no support what so ever), I needed to have my records sent. I faxed the ob/gyn's office and asked them to do it. 45 minutes later their receptionist called and told me 'Dr. X feels that you are doing well and have no need to consult a specialist at this time'.
Um HELLO?? Who's body am I living in?? Oh yeah... MINE! So I get to make all of the decisions!

Some doctors are way to self important, in my opinion.

Is it possible for you to file a complaint with the hospital that she is affiliated with. It doesn't quite sound like its the right practice.

TO top it all off, she's a horrible doctor, she removed a few moles (only after some begging), and I've seen two derms since, and both of them said, 'Who DID THIS TO YOU'? She took a **** razor blade and just sliced it off...sorry for the detail, but she's horrible!

Call your insurance company and ask them what they think? These doctors are under so many requirements from each of the insurance policies that you never know when they will step in. If she is charging you based on what she feels is your reason that sound very ILLEGAL to me and that your insurance should be aware of that--- good luck

you dont need to give a reason. you have a right to your medical records regardless of what the reasons are. all they need is your signature. i used to work for a medical malpractive lawyer and had to get medical records all the time. usually, the drs. charged $.75 per page.

I should send her the letter on my letterhead:

Kathleen xxxxxxxxx, Attorney At Law.

I know legally I am entitled to my records, but this sh*t happens all the time! If you don't 'Play along' they can just make it harder on you, ie. never receiving your letter, or if it's certified, 'loosing the letter', or saying that it takes weeks to process the request, etc.

So, I am telling her that I'm moving. Then, if I get any probs. will I have to have words!::

I have been working for a doctor for many years now, and if a doctor requests it to release the records there is usually no charge if it is going to another doctors office directly. If you want a copy of the records, I believe it is 75 cents a page and then about 15.00 a x ray. That is what we charge. There are state laws about the maximum they can charge a page, and I would just put in the letter that you need your recorsds for your own personal use, it is NONE of her business who and why you need it. That is an invasion of privacy, she might want to know so she can call that doctor ahead of time to discuss it, or so she can cover her own a$$. Good luck.
