They were saying that the cake the hall presents isn't the cake they serve to people. Does anyone know if this is true?

Sometimes the cake is for show and they have a sheet cake in the back that they cut and serve. I don't know if all halls do it, but I know it happens.

I've heard that before BUT...only if the B & G did it that way. Some people, to save money, will have a 'fake cake' - where only the top is real (they take that home) and the rest is for show. Then they have a sheet cake in the back that is handed out to the guests. I can't imagine that being the case across the board - that would be, well, wrong.

my cake presented was the one served.

I was at a wedding once and they had this elaborate cake on display (huge like lizlen's with all the tiers) and my date was a baker. He took one look at the cake and said it was a fake. No one else notices (I didn't), and usually the frosting matches.

it's very easy to switch...
After the cutting ceremony they roll the cake away to cut it for all the guests. (they wouldn't stand there and cut it for 150+ people in front of everyone) so they bring it in the back and voila! they can serve something else and no one would know.

I know someone who had the fake cake with 1 real tier and served sheet cake to all of us. She said it was cheaper that way. The cake tasted good to me, so goes to show what I know!!

I heard that to. I was completely amazed. I wonder how many weddings I have been to that had the fake cake... I can say I really don't think it is a bad idea. Sometimes certain cakes get icky if they are out too long..

I think you would know if you got a piece that had the indentation where the pillars were (that held the tiers)

I have heard of this before, but I never saw it personally & IMO, I would never do it.

some brides like to get a small fancier cake, then have a sheet cake in the back for the rest.. same filling same baker.. its just cheaper for the fancy cake to be smaller..

I was just at my reception hall and they have never heard this being done before there. But they do no of some other people who have done it. I asked about I was so curious...

I have heard of this as well. I dont know if my reception hall does this or not, I will have to ask them. IMO, (and this is only me) I dont think it would make a difference if the guests had the sheet cake IF and ONLY IF, the sheetcake was made by the same baker and exactly the same as the cake displayed. If the only difference between the 2 cakes is the shape its in, than it shouldnt matter. In addition, being that my wedding is in July, having the cake out too long will cause it to start melting, and I wouldnt want my guests to have a sugary mess. That is just my take on it, but I would NOT agree with this practice if the sheet cake was a different cake (ingredient wise) all together.
