we're currently in the process of buying a house. It is going to be really hard the first year or two, but renting is SO expensive too so we want our money to go towards a mortgage at least.
The only reason we can afford this at all is because we are putting only 5% down and we both have lived at home since college
how are you only putting 5% down?

well we are putting 5% down and getting a loan (i think they call it a piggyback loan?) for the remaining 15% to avoid paying PMI insurance. Our mortgage rates will be a little higher but there is no way we could save 20% anytime soon. It also helps that our house appraised for much more than we are paying - so we only plan to stay for a year or two. If we were planning to buy a 'permanent' home we definitely wouldn't take this route - you get hit with ALOT of interest

Re: Living Arrangements
we are going to be living in an apartment until we save enough to buy a house. We just graduated from college and are paying for 95% of the wedding ourselves and with college loans to pay off we can't afford to go too far into debt just yet.

Re: Living Arrangements
We are looking to buy a house in Pennsylvania, probably by the end of this year. FH's company is relocating and we are moving so that FH can keep his job. FH will live in the house until the wedding while I stay here and finish up my first year of teaching. After we are married in July 2006, I will join him in our new home.
If we had decided to stay on LI, we would probably be renting for another two years - at least!

Re: Living Arrangements
we'll still be renting together, but we are hoping to move to nc (depending on if i get into a grad program there). the cost of living is so much less and there are more job oppurtunities for me after i graduate. we'd get a house when i get a 'real' job. ~lacey

Re: Living Arrangements
On LI, in some cases paying for a mortgage and paying for rent are the same price. I think we are going to buy, but not on LI...its WAY too much money

Re: Living Arrangements
We're currently renting an apartment and I feel like it's just going out the window. After the wedding we're gonna buckle-down and save save save so that we can buy a house before starting a family. Since we're getting married mid-2006 I'm aiming to be in a house for New Year's 2007!

Re: Living Arrangements
right now we are renting out my parents house in new york, since they live in florida... and we are getting an incredible deal from my dad so we are buying this house we are living in now and in 2 years we can make money off of this house and buy another.

Re: Living Arrangements
We are renting right now (together). We hope to get a co-op around the time of the wedding. If not, we are going to move into a smaller apartment to help save money. We aren't in a rush to get a house per se, but I would like to own something next year.

Re: Living Arrangements
I am hoping that we are able to buy a house....we are trying so hard to do this. I am sort of against renting because I rather use that money to save for buying a house. If worse comes to worse we will live in my FH's house in their basement...much rather have a house but if we can't swing it, this is our other option. We shall see.....it's so hard with the prices nowadays. I am a good saver and can't see how we are going to do this!!

Re: Living Arrangements
We are starting to look for houses now and if we do not find one before we are married, we will move into my parents house after the wedding, RENT FREE, totally seperate area and my parents are great!! Then we can start the house search again, we just started this weekend and its really exciting!

Re: Living Arrangements
I'm moving into FI's house after we are married. I am moving to England for about five years and we are going to save money (since the value of the dollar is so weak against the pound) and then move back here after that. FI has a great job and a home already so this is the best option for us. Atleast I will be able to travel around Europe for awhile!
