I've heard this phrase...I guess I know what it means...But what exactly is the alternative? (For those who are not independently wealthy, but rather must earn their income...)

Re: Living paycheck to paycheck
living paycheck to paycheck is jsut having enough to live on without really saving anything.....
the alternative would be making enough to live on WHILE be able to put money in the bank that you are not spending!

So where does splitting your check into spending money and a savings account fall into?

Re: Living paycheck to paycheck
it doesn't...whatever money you have, is being spent on something...it may go in the bank at first, but it's basically spent before it gets there

If you are able to put some of your money towards bills and some of it into savings you are not living 'paycheck to paycheck'.

Re: Living paycheck to paycheck
I don't know if there's a term for that...but it's my understanding that if you are saving anything, you aren't living paycheck to paycheck. Right now we're trying to save as much as we can so that when we buy a house on LI and are so poor that we can't even afford to 'live' period even WITH our paychecks, we can tap into that savings for a while!

Re: Living paycheck to paycheck
What if you have some $$ in the bank but you are not adding to it each payday. Is that considered living paycheck to paycheck?

Re: Living paycheck to paycheck
6-12 months of income saved to cover your bills without a lifestyle change, plus socking $$ away on a weekly basis towards a retirement account = not living paycheck to paycheck for me.

Re: Living paycheck to paycheck
right now we have about 2 months of rent socked away without our paychecks....but we will be able to put away some $$ after all the bills get paid each month which is what we wanted

buy only the things you need, not what you want...
i was never a huge spender, but being a casualty of the technology bust really put things into perspective. if i didn't have $$ saved i would have been in deep doo doo.

Re: Living paycheck to paycheck
even though we save money- we STILL live paycheck to paycheck b/c we consider saving like paying the bills...
