Living Together

Living Together

Just wanted some thoughts... I was wondering how many of you are currently living with your significant other? Were you living together before he popped the big question or was it afterward? Just some insight. We were living together for 10 months and then he asked me to marry him. So by the time we are married we will have already been living together for 2 years. I think it was a really great thing. It has been a wonderful experience for me and really helped me to see what it is like living with your spouse and what life is like..

We lived together for about 7 months before we were engaged.

Re: Living Together

We are the opposite! We decided not to live together before getting married. Our decision was made for many reasons but I feel it was the greatest decision we made! We both wanted getting married to feel like a new life we were beginning together and we felt that if we lived together first, it might take away from that.
This is just our opinion. I have alot of family/friends who live(d) together first and it was great for them but what we didnt want for us was summed up by a friend who was recently married.
After being married for 3 weeks someone asked how married life was....her thought, its just like it was before (they lived together for 2 years previous)
It worked out best for them as they needed that to get to where they are now but we just didnt feel it was right for us! Again, This is just our opinion.

We lived together for a year before he popped the question. It's been a great experience and we haven't regretted it once!

we aren't living together- i'm excited to see what it is like living w/ him. i'm sure we'll both learn a lot about each other in doing so - some may be bad but that's okay- it will work out fine.

Re: Living Together

We lived together for 2 weeks before he asked me to marry him. Getting engaged was our plan for over a year. However, living together was not. He was up for a job position that would of been 70 miles from his old place. His current boss told him if he wanted the job he had to move closer. I happen to live closer to to his new job. His salary tripled so, it has been ALOT easier saving for a wedding and a house.
I am glad we did it, learning new things about each other every day.

We actually just started living together about 2 weeks ago. It helps me out with the rent and other bills so that we can save tobuy a house after the wedding

I Agree with Kelly9904 & jagrawal7. I want it all to be brand new and exciting and different. i am not of the opinion that you have to live with someone to know if you want to marry them.....In My Honest Opinion If you love the person ENOUGH anything that comes up when you live together after being married will be worked out. what could possibly be so bad that you would divorce over after living together--he leaves his clothes on the floor? again Just my opinion

Re: Living Together

Well, we lived together for a few months before getting engaged. We will continue to live with eachother, and I can't stand the thought of not living with him. For the girls who feel like they want to start something brand new after the wedding, I can understand that completely. It makes sense, but for common sense reasons we decided to live together, and it's wonderful. Being able to go to sleep next to someone never you love every night can't lose its luster in my opinion. I think everyone decides what works best for them.

Re: Living Together

we live together and we have been for about 2 years now. If we were both still on LI, this would've been different, but since I moved out to CA to be with him while he's working out here, (and since the cost of living is so crazy and I knew no one else) it seemed like best senario. I think it helped him feel better since his parents divorced when he was young and he was afraid of making the same mistake they did. Everything's been great and it still is. I still want to start something new when we get married, so hopefully we'll have a new condo or house to move into at that point. I had friends that lived together, and the night of their wedding they went home to their house, did laundry and went to bed. I don't want to be like that. I want it to be a new beginning.

Re: Living Together

We never 'officially' decided to move in together. I just started staying over his house almost every night, and I just never left one day. I don't think it will take away from anything once we are married, I think that there was a big adjustment period to living with someone and we managed to work that out before we got married so it's one less thing to argue about.

Re: Living Together

We have been living together for about a 1 1/2 years. We got engaged last may. We did this yes, because an opportunity came up. We found a nice Condo for a good price so we went for it. Which i am thankful for becuase just a year later the value of our condo has gone up over 80 grand!!!! But before condo we knew we wanted to live together.
These are the reasons why i am greatful for it. I know that some girls want 'to start a new life' after they get married. But I am here to tell ya, it ain't all a bed of roses. Living together is a very BIG transition, at least it was for me. You think you know someone, well let me tell ya there is a lot more. EX. Money management: who paying the bills (A BIG ONE)- also the leading cause of divorce, there was also little things like cleaning, food shopping, and cooking. Things you think come natural but to some it doesn't. So i am glad that we went trough this learning process before marraige. Now i can know that our first year will be a little easier for us. We know each other not only as people but as a real couple. My Fi, before we got married stayed over all the time, but it is not the same when you live together.
GOOD LUCK

Re: Living Together

I think alot of couples choose to live together before marriage because it is practical. Like many of the posters said, there is a big adjustment period when you first move in with someone and they like the fact that they 'got it over with' before marriage. For me, I want that big adjustment period to come after we are married. I think it's part of the fun and newness of being a newlywed. I don't want to 'get it over with' or 'get it out of the way' first. FH lived with someone before and though he'd like me to move in, he understands and agrees with my reasons for wanting to wait.

I already know it won't all be fun and games and playing house since I'm getting a taste of it now by spending most of my time at his house. But it will be sooo nice to come 'home' together for the first time as husband and wife. My decision doesn't work everyone and even in my case, we'd be much better off financially if we lived together. But I believe if you are going to get married, not only do you have to love the person enough, you also have to be willing to work enough at the marriage... even when you don't know what's coming. Marriage is for better or for worse, not 'if I can deal with living with you so lets try it out first'. Yes, I also believe that alot of people who live together know this. Just my opinion.

prncssrachel - I completely agree. i could not imagine my life now not living together. And it is so wonderful to wakeup and go to sleep with one another every night. Everyone chooses different things in their life and this was a wonderful choice for us.

Although I stay over his house a lot, FH and I do not live together. We are looking forwardto it, once we are married!!!

Re: Living Together

FH and I did not live together before getting engaged. I actually moved in about three months after we were engaged. I usually stayed at his apartment on weekends and during the summer. Well, the summer after we were engaged, I went back home to live again but after being home for two days, it honestly was painful being away from him and not being in the same bed. So, back I went to his house and we have lived together ever since. This was actually when my mother knew for sure that I was truly in love. She saw how upset and lonely I was not being with him and originally she was dead set against letting me move out until I was married. But, she totally understood. I think it is wonderful living together before we are married. We have truly gotten the opportunity to get to know each other completely. And we will still have so much more to look forward to once we get married. We will beging a new life as man and wife and begin a new chapter in our lives together. It has also helped us to save money living together. I would not change a thing!!!
