living with in-laws...

living with in-laws...

to save money for a house--would you do it? FMIL is finishing her garage to make a studio apt, and she made the offer for FH and i to live there rent-free in order to save for a big downpayment. we would have our own separate entrance and everything, but i still wonder how it will be with privacy and whatnot. i do get along with her, but the thought still makes me a little nervous.

any thoughts on pros & cons?

To savve money...yes, I would def. do it. Right now I'm living in an aprtment on top of my Mom's house... and my FH basically moved in. He HATES living here...b/c my Mom does ask for alot...but yet he likes it b/c it's free LOL. If we had to move into his parents house...NO..>I woundnt go...we'd be stuck in the basement and have to share the kitchen and bathroom and all that. At least my house I have my OWN everything LOL. We'll looking to buy a small small house somewhere since that's all we'll be able to afford right off the bat.
It really all depends on how well you get along with the in laws...are you close to them... are you considering them your own family..? Those are all things that need to be taken into effect...
Good luck!

Re: living with in-laws...

I just did this! lol we lived 3 years in our own apartment, and then decided to move into his Dad's house for the next year while we save money for the wedding, pay off some debt and save money for our own house some day. I was so against it at first, b/c I didn't want 2 have to go backwards. I can honestly say, it was probally the best decision we've made in a long time. It's been a month and we have had NOOOOO problems. His dad does his thing, we do our thing, everyonce and awhile we eat dinner together, but nothing is expected.

The privacy issue to be honest is better than i thought it would be. There is always times when we are alone and sometimes i forget his dad is even at the house.

eta: If its rent FREE...DO IT! lol thats the best thing anyone can ever offer

HECK NO!! My FMIL is SO annoying and does not ever stop talking...Sometimes I can't even stand to be in the same room with her for five minutes, let alone live in her house!! I'm all for saving money, but I always wanted FH and I to have our OWN place, regardless of how small it is. We actually live in a really nice apartment with $$ rent, but I like being independent and out on our own. If you're living with the parents, it's like they always know your business, when you're home and when you're not, when you're fighting, who's coming over, when you go shopping....Privacy is key to me, so even to save money, I wouldn't do it.

I would never do it. We all get along great, on both sides, and I'd like to keep it that way. Neither set of parents need to have that much information about your home life with your FH. It's tempting to save money, but I'm not sure if anything goes wrong, it would be worth it.

I agree with everyone.....take opportunity to save

the nice thing too is that we would have our own separate dwelling, however small, on the property with it's own kitchen, entrance, bathroom, etc. it's tough to pass up, but it does feel like going backwards.

That's a pretty good setting, your own space . . . . that's important. It's not a step backward to save money!! I would just want to make sure we had our own space. I don't want to live 'with' my parents or 'with' his parents, and it seems like your arrangement is not that.

thats what we are going to have...its completely seperate from FILs house, yet still on their property, o i think its ok, as long as they dont have a key!

First that was really nice of her to offer that. Im not in that situation as we own homes already. However, i think if you could try to stick it out for a year or two it is definitely worth it for you in the end. Its very difficult nowadays to purchase a home in agood area without spending a small fortune & taxes being ridiculous. Take it from me i know. Save as much as you can. Its only to your benefit in the end. GOOD LUCK

I think it all depend on the inlaws, and your relationship with them... It can go great and everyone is happy or it can go bad and creat more tension

When I saw this all I could do was laugh ! My sister said the same thing... my sister is now married for 14 years, 4 kids later... and told my family that she would live with her in laws for a year to save up for a house... in the end 14+ yrs later , they are still living there in the same house !

yeah, we're def not sticking around that long. as it is, getting our furniture into a studio is going to be a game of tetris. we're willing to make the sacrifice bc we're anxious to have our own home.

not to mention moving farther east to where FMIL lives nearly doubles my commute...

Re: living with in-laws...

We are doing this. We are living rent free in their basement apartment which is HUGE. It would cost about $1500 a month anywhere else so I am grateful for this. Then we are buying their house next year! I can't wait. The FIL's built a home in SC and they are moving very soon.

Thats what were doing, but were not living rent free...
We gutted the basement appt and re-did it to our liking. Our own entrance, etc.
I am a bit worried because I see how attached she gets to her children(how she will react when we leave...im afraid she may end up heart broken ) but I think for the long run, saving so we can buy our big home... is worth all of itlol

Re: living with in-laws...

HAHA!! We just had to do this too!! We were living in a house that was a rent to own situation and the owner of the house got into financial trouble and had to sell the house right away (we were supposed to buy it in June of '09)...anyway, we were looking for another apartment but FIL's said they were looking to buy an investment property anyway, so they wanted to start looking for us to live in and we'd pay them rent. We did find a place, but it turned out to be a foreclosure, which we didn't know at first...and we put a bid in in April and we're still waiting for an answer!!!! They're already preapproved and everything is ready to go, but these foreclosures take forever. It stinks!! Anyway, in the meantime, the house we were living in sold and we had to get out. We've been living in the basement for a little over a month. As far as space goes, it *****!! But my FMIL is one of my best friends...she's the sweetest woman on the face of the earth and since I'm not close with my mom it's quite the blessing! Hopefully the house will go through soon!! I love her dearly, but she wants to do everything for us!! Our laundry, meals, anything you can think of...so it's kinda hard since I'm always trying to get everything done before she does, which is hard since she doesn't have a full time job and I do!! It's great saving money, but I'm very independent, so that kinda drives me crazy sometimes!!

Re: living with in-laws...

This is definitely something that has been going through our minds lately. We own a co-op and would love to have a house shortly after the wedding. I don't think it would be an issue for us because his dad is barely home to bother us. I would definitely suggest trying it, especially if its rent free.

Re: living with in-laws...

My parents own a 2 family house in Whitestone and we're taking the apartment upstairs for a few years. FH seems fine with it, I told him we didn't have to go up there if he didn't want to but he said it's fine. My parents aren't the type to just pop in upstairs to say hi...my mom is the opposite of that. Plus the apartment has a living room, dining room, full kitchen, and 3 bedrooms....it's perfect even if we have kids, and it iwll definitely give us a chance to save as much as we can for a house.

Ohh and did I mention, we have the washing machine, dryer and backyard for our own use as well....it's a pretty good deal for now.
