living with in-laws...

to save money for a house--would you do it? FMIL is finishing her garage to make a studio apt, and she made the offer for FH and i to live there rent-free in order to save for a big downpayment. we would have our own separate entrance and everything, but i still wonder how it will be with privacy and whatnot. i do get along with her, but the thought still makes me a little nervous.

any thoughts on pros & cons?

yes, we will be living down the block from my parents and upstairs from my grandparents when we get married. the plan is to save big for a few years and then buy that dream house we want. since it is a brand new 3 bedroom in queens we figure we are saving about 1500 a month...which translates to $90,000 in five years! so do it =)

We did this but not to save money, we did because our house was being knocked down and rebuilt.
We were paying the mortgage and bills the entire time, plus construction costs.

I have to say we saved on renting an apartment to live for those 10 months. But it was definately hard on everyone.
It was a big house too.

I wouldnt, I get along great with my inlaws and want to keep it that way. I know its your own seperate living quarters BUY you still will not have total privacy.

to save money yes!!! My FSIL did this with her inlaws and right after the wedding they bought a house, but they were living together for about 3 years to save lol.

My FMIL was BEGGING us to move in with them. I absolutely refused. She was doing it more for her own purposes, since FSIL got married in June and moved out, she's heartbroken to be losing both children in a matter of months. I love her dearly, and I want to keep it that way. She's very old school, and needs a lot of attention. Fortunately for us, my mom has apts in Queens so she's giving us one to live in rent free.
