My parents currently rent out the basement of our home. They have offered to rent the basement to FH and i once we are married to allow us to save money faster to buy our own home. There is a separate entrance
Keep in mind i have twin 14 year old sisters, who love us to death and would want to be around most of the time..
The stipulation would be that we would pay rent, and be treated like normal tenants.
Question, FH thinks it is not a good idea because he feels we would not have enough privacy. What do you girls think? Living here would allow us to save an extra 700 a month to put toward a home..
I'm thinking this situation would last 6-9 months.. Don't you think we should try it out and see how it goes??

Girl i am in your same shoes, my husban feels just like your husban. And i also have a sister that loves both of us. The only difference is that we got married one year ago. We are now playing to move becasue we need our own privacy. I know that it is going to be hard for us to save money but in order to have a better marriage we need to move Now.

we are moving into FH parents basement and i was a little worried about the same thing....but i figured i wouldnt worry till i see what happenes. I say give it a shot!

thats a tough situation..It can kind of go both ways..if i wasn't getting enough privacy i wouldn't like it at all..so maybe you can discuss with them how much your privacy means to you before you move in. However on the other hand..being able to save money is a definate plus..i lived at home with my parents for the last couple of years (not with fh, like most couples do) but this made it possible for me to save money and now we're able to purchase a nice house!! I definately say if you can tolerate it, do it, in the end you'll have a house to show for it and be able to afford it!

I actually just moved into an apartment on my mothers house with my FH in May. My mother built an extention on the house for us (a wonderful 1000 sq. foot apartment!) and let us design it as we wanted! We are paying rent, but very low rent for the size, $800 per month. it has a seperate entrance. I 99% of the time enjoy it! i am close w/my mother and enjoy being able to still see my family almost every day. We have seperate everything, which is great, but she is still right next store if I need to 'borrow a cup of sugar' lol. The most annoying part is that she is able to come over any time of the day, which would be fine w/me, other than sometimes she just lets herself in w/o knocking, which aggrivated me and my FH to death, because we wouldnt do that to her! But we are working on that issue.... and I have to say I have no regrets, it is helping us save up money for the wedding and we will prob. stay there another year after we marry to save up more money for a house!

do it - you have the opportunity to save! you would be foolish to pass it up....
FH and I got our own apartment and lived there for a year - then his sister & her husband moved out of his parents basement apartment and his parents offered the apartment to us. the deal was we would pay rent - but they would cut us a break and charge us less than what we were paying at our old apartment. at first i didnt want to do it. i didnt want to move out of our first home together and i felt like moving in downstairs from his parents was like taking a step backwards. eventually we decided to take the apartment and its the best decision we ever made. his parents give us 100% privacy. they also let us do our laundry in their house which is really conveinent. there is always someone around if we need a favor - like a someone to check on the dog, or if we need butter or an egg the biggest plus is the amount of money we are saving by living there - plus i rather pay his parents rent money and help them pay their mortgage than give my money to some stranger. i think you should go for it. if it doesnt work out you can always move!

I feel the same.. I would much rather give my money to someone I love and know that needs it then to a stranger!

whoa why did my post come up 3 times?
unless your family is intrusive i dont think its a bad idea - my FIL's NEVER EVER intrude on us - they give us 100% privacy. luckily FHs sister and her husband did the same thing and lived there for about a year before they bought a house so FSIL kept them in check
