Liz, you've inspired me!

...to take up knitting! I downloaded instructions on the internet and bought some needles and wool this weekend and I've already done about 5 inches of a skinny scarf! So proud of myself!

I'm such a trend-setter!

I'm in the process of trying to teach myself how to work with two different skeins of yarn at once... it's hard and I think I'm doing it all wrong!

wow, you taught yourself from the internet? I tried to teach myself last year & didn't get very far. I think I needed better pictures--I was going by what came with my 'starter kit'

Re: Liz, you've inspired me!

I just finished a scarf for my mom this weekend. It was just a basic stockinette stitch. I then attempted ribbing. Grrr.

Any suggestions?

whoa! Slow down there! Stockinette???? Ribbing???

I have no idea what type of stitch I'm doing, but it's making a solid strip of cloth, so I'm considering it a success and then you come on here throwing all these fancy tactics into the mix! sorry, I'm not there yet...maybe our resident knitting expert can help...Liz? Juliet needs you!

Don't worry Farah, I didn't know what it was called until a friend at work showed me and told me. Stockinette is when you knit one whole row and then purl another whole row and you alternate. It has a real traditional sweater knit to it.

Ribbing is knitting and perling in the same row (knit 2, purl 2 or something) but when I tried it looked like a bunch of knots

OMG! I'm not an expert! What kind of ribbing? horizontal or vertical? Is the stitch shrinking on you?

Re: Liz, you've inspired me!

I actually bought some boucle-looking yarn so it all looks like knots! actually, DH told me I should've bought something a little more elementary, but I think this might be a little more forgiving in the end But, now I'm thinking I should go back and get some more yarn and thicker knitting needles.

BTW, I've just been going back and forth knitting a basic stitch, I haven't been purling. Is that wrong?????

okay, wait, I got it. Vertical ribbing and it's looking sloppy. It's the same principle as a stockinette stitch. If the first row is k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, then the second row is p2, k2, p2, k2, p2. Where you knit on the previous row, you purl on the subsequent row, and where you purl on the previous you knit. Does that help? Also, try making the ribs wider, maybe?

Farah, no , you're not wrong! Knitting every row is called a Garter Stitch!

Re: Liz, you've inspired me!

Juliet and Farah I've got a good and easy pattern for you! It's reversible too! I made FH's scarf wit this and he luuuuuuuurves it!

I make the rows odd numbered so that I can start every row with a knit.

Seed Stitch -- Produce a seed stitch by first alternating knit and purl stitches on one row. On the second row, knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches. Repeat until the desired number of rows has been completed. This stitch produces a very textured surface.

i.e Row 1 - k1,p1,k1,p1,k1
Row2 - k1,p1,k1,p1,k1

I'll take a picture of FH's scarf and post it to show you!
