location, Location, LOCATION!?!?!?!?!

location, Location, LOCATION!?!?!?!?!

HELP!

FOr those of you that currently live with FH, how did you decide where to live?

For those that are starting to look for a place to move together, how are you deciding the location?

FH lives in QNZ. I live in BK. It is better for both of us to live in QNZ, but the borough is big and we have very different 'wants' in terms of location and priorities.

I WANT something close to transportation (trains) and stores. FH doesnt see that as a priority. He would rather have more room and a parking space.

Yesterday we saw a place, and I liked it -- liked it more than other places we have seen. But FH just picked out all the things he didnt like about it. I feel like we will never find a place we both like alot

(just as a background, we have been looking on-and-off for about a year, so we have seen alot of places in different areas of queens)

Re: location, Location, LOCATION!?!?!?!?!

did u look in astoria near astoria park?

i have friends that live there..they are right in front of the park and near the water...its a really pretty area....they pay cheap rent and there is always tons of parking. They are only about a 10 minute walk to the NW train (Ditmars Stop). They love it...FH and I considered moving into queens at one point to save money and were looking at this area.

do you know how much the rent is?

We are looking for a 2 bedroom, and have been mostly looking at buying (just to build equity). But if the rent isnt bad, it might be an option. If you have any more info - FM me!!!

I LOVE Astoria - thats where we were looking yesterday. FH isnt sold yet.... :-/

Re: location, Location, LOCATION!?!?!?!?!

I was living in Manhattan and FH was living on LI. I was not ready to move back to LI and he did not want to move to Manhattan. So... we needed to find a compromise and we decided that Brooklyn was it! It's close to work for both of us, we can have a car there, we love the neighborhood, we are close to our friends/family....it's just all about where you are going to be the happiest. We really love it there and can't imagine being anywhere else.

Keep looking and take your time! You will find somewhere that will make you both happy

Where I live has the best of both for you guys - Forest Hills. I live just outside of the Forest Hills Gardens, so I have the quietness that I sometimes crave. There is ALWAYS parking by me; in fact, that's something that FH and my friends with cars always comment on when they swing by my way.
I'm also super close to Austin Street for shopping and Queens Boulevard for the subway.
FM me if you have any questions about the 'hood
(BTW, when FH and I get married, I'm moving in with him in Ozone Park...I am really going to miss Forest Hills!)

Re: location, Location, LOCATION!?!?!?!?!

I had no problems going to a new area, FH wanted to stay in his comfort zone areas so he was only looking the surrounding areas by him (it was his job to do the house hunting). He is from Franklin Square, so he was looking in Franklin Square, West Hempstead, Valley Stream. We found a great house with a great price in West Hempstead.

we have both always lived in Brooklyn, with the exception of when FH went to school at Stoney Brook. he had an apartment in Port Jefferson. at the same time as when he decided to transfer school, my cousins was getting married so we took over her apartment. downstairs from my parents. so we currently live in Brooklyn. i loved FHs apartment in Port Jeff, however since i work in the city taking the LIRR everyday is not appealing to me.

we will be moving out of our current apartment hopefully within a year. we will remain in Brooklyn because if we move out of Brooklyn we are moving far.

We had to learn to compromise, I really didn't want to move to CT but FH got a terrific job up here. I was working in the city at the time. So we ended up about 75 minutes outside the city, but our apartment was literally one block from the train so that was good.

So my suggestion would be sit down, and write down pros and cons on each area and what each of you are willing to compromise on.

FH lives in Queens and I live on LI (right on the border of Nassau and Suffolk, right in the middle) and it just made sense for me to move to Queens. We're looking for a new place now rather than the apartment he lives in. We both work in the city so we definitely want a place close to transportation and some kind of store within walking distance (even if it's just a convenience store to get necessities when we run out). I think location is really important. You want a place that makes it easy to get to work, seeing family, running errands, etc. We're actually in the process of hearing about a place in Maspeth so we're keeping our fingers crossed. We actually LOVE Forest Hills - it's perfect with the transportation, shops, neighborhood - so if Maspeth doesn't work out then I think we're going to start looking there.

HOW is there parking by you??!?! I wish! I live over there too and parking is a nightmare. I live on the border of Forest Hills and Rego Park. I guess it's better by the FH Gardens???

To the OP. It is hard. Just keep looking around until it's something you both like. You might have to compromise, but you should both feel overall like you like the apt and the area. FH moved into my place in Queens, so it was easier. After this. Im pretty sure we'll stay in Queens, but I know it will be hard!

Areas in Queens that I love and you guys should look: Astoria, Sunnyside, parts of Woodside, Middle Village (but far from trains..2-fare), Forest Hills/Rego Park, parts of Jackson Heights. Good luck! I know it's stressful.

Yeah, parking is great by me. People here have driveways and USE THEM (I hate when people don't use their driveways and use street spots!) and a lot of people by me either seem to have only one car per household or no cars at all. By me, you don't even need a car, just legs and a Metrocard!

Yeah, you don't need a car by me either. I actually just got one a couple of months ago; no one really has driveways here though. it's all apt complexes.

Bayside is a good choice too! I forgot that. Whitestone, Little Neck (but that's going more towards LI).

Have you thought about Sunnyside at all? My brother lives within close proximity (less than a 5 minute walk) to the 7 and there is always parking.

We're trying to decide this now. FH lives in Brooklyn and I live in the Bronx. His work in in BK and I just took a job in the BX, so we have no idea how we are gonna work it out. I'm willing to move to BK as long as I can easily connect to the 2,4,5 train line for work, so we'll see what happens but we're about to start looking for places soon too.
