'lolita'

'lolita'

so, i know in general the name Lolita tends to have a negative conductation (sp?)... after having it as a nickname for years now I'm used to it.
BUT i have to say, since i have been called it now for some years (yes, people really do call me it, or 'Lo' ofr short)
anyway, i've grown to love the name. And i would love to name my daughter it. (i love Lola for short) But since society has their own opinion of it, do you think thats a bad idea?
Even though I love it, i would never want a daughter to be ridiculed.
Just wondering your opinions on this (I'm bored!)
Thanks

eta: i also like the names Olivia and/or Stella

That's tough, because the name does carry a stigma as you mentioned. Growing up is hard enough as it is! Personally I wouldnt name my child something that might lead her to be ridiculed.

Lola is lovely though - that could be your adaptation of it! At least you'll know what it came from.

Id stick with Olivia or Stella. I would Never name my child Lolita. What would even consider that? Remember when you first came here I posted the Definition of Lolita.

Main Entry: Lo·li·ta
Pronunciation: lO-'lE-t&
Function: noun
Etymology: from Lolita, character in the novel Lolita (1955) by Vladimir Nabokov
: a precociously seductive girl

Why not just LOLA.

i REALLY wouldn't do that to my kid. They will get ridiculed, and probbaly labelled a slut in jr high/hs. Especially in LI, where we all have the phrase 'long island lolita' emblazoned on our brains, and that was for an attempted murderer.

Also, Lolita is YOUR alias, YOUR identity, let your daughter have her own!

Re: 'lolita'

I don't see a problem with it. But that's because I'm Latina and Lola is a spanish name that is VERY common and does NOT carry that connotation at all within the Latino community.

Lolita is actually the NICKNAME for Lola. So Lola is not for short. It means 'little Lola'. So I would name her Lola, not Lolita.

Anyway, I wouldn't give it any more serious thought until you are actually pregnant with a girl -- your opinion will probably change completely at that point.

I definitely don't think you should name your future daughter Lolita. That name will stigmatize her from the start, and make people perceive her in a certain way, even if she has not done anything to deserve that perception or repuation.

Kids have so much to deal with in terms of teasing and bullying as they grow up. I feel it is really important to name children something that will not give kids an extra reason to pick on them.

Lola is a beautiful name...I would go with that if you really want to, but as marymoon said, Lolita is your identity - let your child have her own.

I was just preparing to same the same exact thing! In the latin language 'ita' at the end of a female name means lil one. For example: Carmen=Carmencita; Ana=Anita; Eva=Evita; Clara=Clarita, etc, etc....

Yes, but Lola is Dolores in spanish, not a real name, just like Bill for William.

Both Jenns are right. As a teacher I could and would never name my child a name that would cause them such a stigma! And like Jenn said Lolita is YOU not your daugther.

Re: 'lolita'

yeah. i never put much thought into it. and then when i did i figured id post to get your guys opinions on it.
like i said, personally i dont think negativelt when i hear of it (for obvious reasons)
and i also had a latina friend Dolores we called Lolita as well.... but this is all true. and i TOTALLY didnt think about teh whole 'Long Island Lolita' thing!
so its either Olivia, Stella or Lola!
Thanks for being honest Everyone!

Although, to play devil's advocate here...by the time your daughter grew up - the whole Long Island Lolita thing would be so far past that none of her classmates would remember it....
I think it's an adorable name, personally. It's one of my nicknames, as is Lola, so I happen to like it.
Of course, I also love the name Olivia...

Whatever you choose....kids will make fun of people for all sorts of reasons....I wouldn't base my decision on what I name my child on that all that much....

The word Lolita was around way before Amy Fisher and will be around long after everyone forgets about her- it is in the dictionary.
They called her that because the word means teenage slut. I would never name my daughter teenage slut.

Sorry lolita- JMO.
