So im sort of freaking out bc i need to find a JOB! ive been looking every day (for a legal position) but it seems like every office that is hiring is looking for someone who is already admitted to the NYS bar or who has been working for a min of 3 years (i JUST took the bar and wont know until Nov if i passed or not). my schools career services office said that last yrs graduating class took an average of 9 MONTHS to find employment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
im freaking out!!! FH and i are looking into houses and what not but i dont want the whole burden on him; i know he doesnt feel that way but I DO!!!! what else can i do?!!? i feel like i should just take on any job in the interim but then i dont bc i feel like it will be frowned upon by law offices if they see i took a hiatus of sorts from the legal profession...its only been 3 weeks since the bar and im alrdy going crazy sitting at home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thoughts??!?!? what would you do!?!

Re: Looking 4 a JOB!
I would maybe temp in a legal office, even if you had to answer phones etc. Can you research legal temp agencies? I am pretty sure most major companies (Adecco, Manpower) have legal divisions.

I agree with finding a temp position until you are notified you've passed the bar. This way, if you're temping they could later find you a perm position.
I work at an doc review company and the agencies we work with for our contract attorneys i Tower, Providus and Strategic. HTH!

Re: Looking 4 a JOB!
I wish that I can say that my firm had a position open. I know when I graduated there were temp positions for contract review and things like that.
I know that you guys want to buy a house but I would wait and rent for a little bit. You do not know where you are going to be working. You do not have to have a bad commute. What if you buy something in Smithtown and then you get a job in White Plains. That would be a bad commute and I can tell you hours for attorneys are not always fun! Also, you want to be able to focus on getting settled at a job and not have to worry about getting a house together as well.
Try going to CLE in the bar associations. It is a great place to meet attorneys.
Maybe see if you can get a part time job working nights at the mall or a restaurant. This way you have the days to look for legal positions and be available for interviews, etc.

Re: Looking 4 a JOB!
Contact Candace Feldman at The Metropolitan Company. She specializes in Legal Staffing and can probably point you in the right direction.
Also contact Fiona Webber at Michael Page International. I'm not sure if she specializes in legal staffing but she can definitely refer you to someone who does.
Please tell them that Melissa M. (see FB for my last name) referred you.
Does your school have any programs where they pay you to do public interest work? Mine has something where they pay you $3000 for working 20 hours a week for a few weeks.. comes out to about$ 15 an hour.

Re: Looking 4 a JOB!
if you want a fun, temporary job and live near long beach, I have info on 2 companies looking to hire for the surf tournament. does not have anything to do with law but could be fun to check out and get some free clothes if you just want to take a 2 week break from looking.

Re: Looking 4 a JOB!
thanks so much girls
mara - i agree and thats why we are only looking as of now; FH and i ideally will be settled before the wedding, though.
melissa - thank you SO much; i reached out to both of them via linkedin so we shall seeee!!! *fingers crossed*!!!
gmcamp - yes my school offers that (refers to it as work study) but not to students who have graduated (i did it while i was still a student, though). they do have a site where they list job postings though which ive been looking at like, hourly LOL, but the prob is that 99% of the positions require more experience than i have *sigh*
i think i'll do as the earlier posts suggested and look into CLE classes or temp positions in the meantime! thanks ladies, i need the support!!!!!!

lol. no, it's actually with some of the tournament sponsors. one of the job descriptions says If you are inspired by the beach, want to make some money while getting some sun and talking to cute boys, we want to hear from you!
i mean i know we're all on here because we're getting married but i'll talk to some aussies all day and get paid :)

Re: Looking 4 a JOB!
Warning....... looking turns into buying (coming from experience. We were just looking and then came across the house and we could not pass it up!)
There is nothing wrong with renting for a little bit and buying later. I rented for 9 years before buying the house!
Take it from experience, a house is expensive to live in. I know I could not do it on my salary as an attorney at the beginning! And I definitely could not do it on one salary!
Don't take this post the wrong way. I have been in your shoes and trust me I understand the feeling of wanting to be settled!

Re: Looking 4 a JOB!
I don't have any suggestions for you, but I just wanted to commiserate. It took me two years from the time I got my Master's to getting a part-time job in my field. I still don't have benefits, though its better than nothing. Its really rough out there and that sucks. I'm sorry you are going through this.

Lindsey - thank you! lol its nice to know that others feel my pain. its hard bc i want so bad to just be PRODUCTIVE!!!
mara - dont worry i know your posts are well-intended no offense taken!!! i totally can see what you mean bc FH is alrdy interested in something. luckily he can financially support us but that is really besides the point, i agree that i need to be financially stable on my own before we launch into such a huge investment. we hate the idea of paying someone else's mortgage, however it might be good for us since we can kind of figure out our likes/dislikes in someone else's home! LOL

Re: Looking 4 a JOB!
Keep me updated. They are usually responsive about getting back to you on LI but if they don't, I have their email addresses.
Also, FILCRO specializes in legal staffing but I never had any luck with them. Still worth giving them a shot.
As a previous poster mentioned, Adecco & Ranstad should also have legal positions.

Re: Looking 4 a JOB!
I fyou can afford to, go volunteer somewhere and do legal work. There are plenty of non-profits or gov't agencies that will let you do that. You'll get experience and there won't be a hiatus.
I, unfortunately, could not afford to do this. While I'm sure you passed the bar, I did not... and it's been hard to even find a pralegal position because they see I have a law degree... so I'm still doing what I was doing in college and law school. Frustrating.

Re: Looking 4 a JOB!
If you want, FM me where you went to school, I might be able to help a little but the jobs I see you might be overqualified for. I have access to job postings but they are no good if they are ones you are already looking at.
ie: college grad paralegal (copy)
p/t clerical position in a small Garden City law firm
civil rights legal intern

Re: Looking 4 a JOB!
i don't have much advice (besides, DEF take a temp position)
but i wanted to tell you that you're not alone. I was temping for about 9 months before i found a job (and I had 3 years of experience as an Assistant Director of Marketing), and I met alot of girls with YEARS of experience in their respective fields in the same prediciment.
Just hang in there and use temping as an opportunity to network. I was feeling totally demoralized, then I got the right assingment with the right company and now i LOVE my job.
