My DH and I lived in downtown Jersey City for 2 years. Took us 20 min on the PATH to get to Manhattan. The Grove St, Newport areas of JC are nicest. Hoboken is nice too but a little more $$. FM me if you would like more info

Re: looking for apt

There's an apartment for rent in my old building in Mineola. It's called The Townhouse and it's on the corner of 1st Street and 3rd Avenue. It is literally a 2 MINUTE walk to the train station, which you can actually see from the building. It's not as updated as some of the co-ops in the area, but it's rent controlled. So, the price of the apt depends pretty much on how many times people have moved out because that's when they can increase the rent. I paid $1000/month for a studio, but there are other apts in the building that were more/less expensive. Hope this helps!

ETA: The ride from Mineola is 35-40 minutes tops to Penn Station. Also, there are TONS of trains coming and going. I commute from Mineola to Manhattan every day.

Where are you looking? Price depends on area. We are in Lindenhurst about 1/4 mile from the train station...its a 30-35 minute commute to Penn and the average one bedroom is $950-1200) We pay $1040 and average 2 bedroom about $1200-$1400.
