Looking for teaching salary info - help?

Looking for teaching salary info - help?

My husband is considering a career change - to a secondary math teacher.

Does anyone know where we can find information on salaries for this type of teacher? Salary.com was vague and I thought there might be a more specific resource for this profession.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

not sure how helpful this will be - but a NYC teacher starts at $39,600.

Re: Looking for teaching salary info - help?

it really depends on the district...mine started at $40 or so...with just BA...no experience...
and maybe $47 or so for MA...no experience..

heres an interesting thing that happened to my sister...she changed careers (in smae field...but changed to teaching it)...and actually negotiated 2 years experience (for her 6!!!) and started on step 3...but at least it was something...

nassau will have higher salaries...suffolk will be more around NYC...maybe just a tad higher...but remember hours of each district vary...I went from 6 1/2 hours a day NYC...to 7 1/2 (and its ecpected that you stay longer) in nassau...it night not be worth the extra money

i have a friend who just got a job in oceanside and is starting at $50,000, but he also has his masters. depending on what level of education you have determines your salary in many cases. i dont think there is any one publication with this information, but you might want to check out newsday. i think they have a pretty comprehensive guide to school districts on long island.

I should amend mine...I really have just looked at my salary and step since I got my job...that was from about 3 years ago...and we got a big 6% raise...

This is all very interesting information.

Does the grade that you teach also affect your salary as well?

His undergrad degree is a B.S. is mathematics. He has no classes in education nor has he done student teaching. Do you need to do both before you can be certified? Is it possible to meet these educational & student teaching requirements between now and the end of the year? (We're still learning so I don't know a whole lot).

i would go to the nys office of teaching web page.

nys teaching web page

it has all of the requirements needed to obtain certification. i do believe that the certification rules have changed. it is best to consult with the certification office of the university your Fh wants to attend.

Thanks for the site. I've been there...the regs change 2/2004.

I agree - he does need an analysis done by someone of his transcript to see what is left between now and then (if it is even possible before the rules change).

If he is not certified by 2/04, he'll need his masters in order to teach -period.

I believe that my district also starts around 40k. We have a 7-71/2 day plus mandatory extra help days and 15 additional hours of staff development and I think 183 instructional days 185 total.

I believe you still must have your student teaching course completed before any cert. will be given.

Re: Looking for teaching salary info - help?

my suggestions...but check with the people who know...

**NYC offers emergency cert to math, scinec and sped...he can teach there (not NYS cert) and use 2 years of teaching experience as student teaching (not sure if this is changing)

**Queens College offers (or used to) a program for people with BAs to become certified before getting their masters...check it out

the grade you teach makes no difference on salary...

My district is actually a very high paying school district in Suffolk County. I know that they pay more than some schools in Nassau County.

It will vary though from district to district.

Thanks for the input.

What district do you work for?

Re: Looking for teaching salary info - help?

I was an uncertified NYC teacher a few years ago. I was going for my masters at Queens college at night. Be careful with Queens college....ask lots of questions before you decide to go there....they would NOT let me use my two years of teaching as my student teaching....and the requirements have changed greatly in the past few years.

I ended up doing something else and not continuing my masters there so it didnt matter....but they gave me so much trouble every step of the way.

FM me if you want any info.

I’m sorry, I’m confused. I’m in the same boat as Karen’s husband; I’d like to go back for social studies. I looked into it about a year and a half ago and I concluded that it shouldn’t take more than three semesters (two of classes, one of student teaching) to become certified. I have a BA in Economics and some of the classes could be applied to the necessary concentration in for social studies.

Someone said something about needing a master’s before you can teach at all based on the new regulations?? Is that really true? Now I’m really regretting that I waited until after I bought the house to do this…. It would be very hard if not impossible for me to go full time…it will take me forever.

Well I must say I am very impressed at the salaries I am seeing to teach in NYC.

I looked in to teaching where I am now (Northern VA) and the salaries were a lot lower than what I am hearing here.

Northern VA cost of living is not much different from NY.

Re: Looking for teaching salary info - help?

no, you dont need a Master's to teach. There are a lot of teachers in my school who are still going to school to get their Master's. Then there are people like me..taking in-service classes to increase my salary

Re: Looking for teaching salary info - help?

Diane...it might be a new requirement - someone said as of 2004...but I'm not sure...

my old roommate went to Queens College and was able to use teaching time as student teaching...so it may depend who you ask...or what you are studying...but as far as I know...NYS allows you to use teaching time in replace of student teaching...
