Re: Looking to adopt a Cat
It was so sad..There was this fat grey and black striped cat with yellow eyes...He was just sitting in his cage looking around...The woman said that a family dropped him off here and he has been depressed ever since. It is so sad that this has happened to him. I felt so bad for him...He was pretty cute too.Scott

TAKE THEM ALL! I can't go into a shelter because it breaks my heart. When I get a house though...my two boys are getting at LEAST one more sibling whether it be a dog or a cat.

Re: Looking to adopt a Cat
9/10 of the many cats we've had have been older adoptions. I think out of the 10+ cats (between my mother and I), maybe 3 were actually 'kittens'. We've had some awesome experiences w/older adoptions.Right now (between homes) we have 6 cats. My Scutches (male red tabby) was a Town of Hempstead adoption about 3 years ago. He won me over when he reached his little paw out of the cage at me. He is the coolest, most laid back cat. Yet he can run and play just like the puppies. We had to get him declawed on all fours because he was scutching up all of our furniture and molding (hence the name). The recovery wasn't as bad as everyone made it out for an older cat (betwween 1-3 when we adopted him).
Mom has a 13 year old male maine coon mix (Shadow) who was a kitten when we got him, Patches 6 (a stray in our neighborhood) is a red/white sherbert mix who was a kitten, Kirby 3 (red tabby) who was a bide a wee adoption as a kitten, Teddy 14-16 (himmy) who we adopted from Ohio w/his mother (through petfinder.org) when he was 10/she was 12. She has since passed on. And then we have Sweetie (calico mix) who we think is about 9. She was a feral I rescued while volunteering w/Noah's Ark last year. She has never lived in a home, yet is the most wonderful, loving kitty ever. She lost an eye due to her environment (living out of a dumpster) and she is clean and doesn't scratch a thing. We've had so many others through private adoptions, strays we took in, etc. It seems like when we lose one, we replace one because the older ones need homes. It's not like we're trying to replace them in our hearts, but if we can help an animal who is homeless, why not? Don't think because they are older they don't have love to give. Some of them have so much love to give it's incredible. And then again, some don't. I've had to work w/a few to win over their trust. My himmy Victor (before Teddy) hid under the bed for six months before I won him over. Once I did, he was like another extention of me. He would follow me around like a dog and would go into a depression if I traveled. When I would come home, he'd leap off the steps and into my arms. He would also meow something that people would swear was 'mama' from the second my car would pull in the driveway. He was like my son. This from a cat that the former owners said had a bad attitude.

Re: Looking to adopt a Cat
Hi Danielle and ScottI currently have 6 in the house. 4 of my own and 2 of my daughter Chrissa's while she renovates her new house. I know you are concerned with your furniture. I keep Repellent by Four Paws (Petco) and Training Aid by Hartz in the house for keeping my kitties away from my furniture. It is not unpleasant smelling to us but they do not like it. If from the beginning you use them then in a little while you will have trained any cat the no-no's of your home. It is important to also provide yes places for scratching. I have a kitty pole 6' tall and goes from floor to ceiling with 3 platforms near a window. They love it and they know that it is OK to scratch that. If you are still looking my friend works at a vet and always has contacts with kittens etc.
