Losing weight during pregnancy....dangerous?

Hi! I figured I'd post here since you guys are super knowledgeable about the whole pregnancy thing.

My brother's wife is about 3 months pregnant and is having a terrible time with morning sickness, she's been getting car sick on short drives too. Well anyway, she told my mom that she lost 35 lbs! She is a bit overweight to begin with, but isn't that dangerous? I just don't want anything bad to happen to the baby or her.

Thanks!

I would be concerned. has she told her doctor about her morning sickness and what's she feeling?
The doctor should be able to monitor her better.
I hope everything works out for her.

A lot of women lose weight during the first trimester due to morning sickness - I know I did. Howver, 35 lbs seems excessive - I would definitely check with the doctor if I were her.

They will probably put her on meds to help ease the MS, but definitely, 35 lbs is too much, she also has to worry about dehydration. Could she be inflating that number a little bit? I have never heard of that much weight loss with a pregnancy and a doctor not intervening already.

If your saying she lost 35 pounds in the 3 months shes been pregnant - than yes I think that is definetly too much - but I know right now I go to the Dr. once a month - wouldn't the Dr. have said something about the huge loss?

I know I lost weight when I was pregnant. I think I lost a total of 14 & then only gained 25. But, being a plus size my doctor didn't see it as a problem.

I'm sure her Doctor must have noticed the weight loss. But, to be on the safe side have her ask him/her about it.

I lost about 12 lbs in the beginning and have now at 34 weeks gained a total of 18 (6 lbs from where I started)

My doc wasn't concerned but kept an eye on it.

35 lbs does seem excessive.

I'm a plus size and my Doctor got mad when I lost 1 lb! I do agree that 35 lbs is a bit excessive.

Thanks for your responses. My brother and SIL went to the Dr. and he gave her meds and checked the baby (they heard the heartbeat for the first time) and said that the baby is fine Perhaps she did exaggerate a bit, who knows, but the baby is ok and hopefully she'll feel better soon.
