We've been to a few showcases, but the bands that we have seen so far have been so loud! These bands would be fine for my crowd of friends (25-35 y.o.'s), but definitely not for the older generation of guests (very reserved and traditional). In horror, my mom even commented that her friends might sue us for heart failure after the wedding.
Is there such thing as a more subdued band that can still play music that my guests can dance to? Can anyone recommend any? Or do I have to rely on telling these bands to control their volume and just hope that they will do so at the wedding?

Re: Low-Key Band
Two bands I would recommend are Gerard Carelli Orchestra and Paul Rich Music. Gerard Carelli specializes in swing and old standards. We used Paul Rich (they're a smidge more diverse and young), in part because we were also concerned about volume control, and they were superb.

This is a concern of mine too. I looked into jazz trios, but I didn't think they were diverse enough. You might want to try that though.
I also wanted a small band. My band is called Circus, and they are 5 peices. THey are pretty diverse, so I am goign to have a lot of jazz & Swing & standards & stuff, and going to request the volume be under conrol & then just hope for the best.
The best man is a musican & says it is a crock when bands say they can't lower the volume. I'll keep him on top of that--the best man does have to earn his keep. . .

My band has a lot of pieces but you control the volume. We talked a lot about that with the band leader. Since they are so talented and you really want to hear the singer, the background isn't as loud. They play everything, even acuostic style so I would check them out. www.kameleonorchestras.com

I used Gerard Carelli- he was amazing. Very classy- people were dancing all night long, and it's just fabulous music- really an experience guests never have.
also- try Madeline Kole- she specializes in Jazz- she's a new vendor on here.

Re: Low-Key Band
We used the Peter Antell Orchestra and they were a bunch of guys my dad's age (the bandleader is a musician my dad played with in bands years ago). They played a lot of jazz standards, swing, ethnic music and some current dance music.
Also try
The Entertainment Group (I think it may also be called Greg Raffa Orchestra) Tom Harrington Peter Duchin- Duchin Entertainment Lester Lanin Orchestras Alex Donner
These are all bandleaders that my dad has worked for through the years and they do a lot of society parties that want low-key classy music.

I totally agree with shawl. We wound up using NYC Swing, who we loved but really were impressed by Gerard Carelli for his professionalism, the quality of his music, and his excellent presentation. Meet with him and see if you agree. Try this weblink http://www.1800gcsings.com/
