does anyone have any great ideas for a bbq engagement party with a luau theme? i bought a lot of great decorations and have some ideas already-but i am always looking for more! any favor, game ideas etc. thanks!:)
and of course all the tropical drinks...pina coladas, mai tais...

You could do a pig roast. Play hawaiin, calypso, beach music.
See if you can make or get someone to make a tiki bar for either serving drinks or food.
You could have people greet guests as they arrive and give them a lai. Use tiki torches to decorate as well as keep bugs away.
My friend had a luau themed rehearsal dinner thrown by her MIL and she looked up all the guests' names and have them translated into their hawaiin name and put them on name tags. I thought that was cute.
The Orietal Trading Company has so many luau decorations, as well as straws, cups, an such.

Cool! So glad you liked that name idea -- of course I stole that one myself I think it's a great theme b/c there is so much you can do.
Maybe you can get some sort of small pool or fountain or something and have floating flower candles floating around in it.
Also someone just wrote a review of her sister's engagement party with Luau theme and there were some really cute ideas.

Also if it's in you budget you could hire a hoola dancer. My friends mom just got remarried and they had a hawaain themed reception (they ran away and got married in hawaii), and at the reception that had a dancer and it was great -- she was beautiful and so talented. I don't know who it was though.
And at my friends RD they had family members do little dances to songs and such -- it was corny but fun at the same time.

I had my sisters shower a hawaiian theme, and it worked out great.
I love decorating and doing theme parties, I found things everywhere, oritental traders, party stores, online, sears etc.
Good Luck everybody was dressed up in Hawaiian attire and we gave out leis

here's a quick update to what i am doing so far-i am sooo excited-i had to share.... -hawaiian food recipes (& other food that will be catered) -frozen drinks w/umbrellas ( i also bought a blow up container with fish on it to store beer/soda -great decorations (nets/blowups/cutouts/etc) -will serve hawaiian punch and have goldfish crackers on the tables -sand buckets w/chips and starfish chip and dip tray (i also bought palm tree plastic chip plates!) -some games for prizes like the hula hoop and water balloon toss (of course these games will be played after a few drinks!!) -translated my guests names into their hawaiian names thanks to stef28! -got leis NOW all i need is wording for the invites letting people know that they should come dressed in a hawaiian outfit ( i will be making the invites myself on the computer-i bought cute invites) AND favor ideas that aren't too expensive!-thanks again for your great ideas--please send some favor and invite ideas!!:):):):)

I did too favors for my sisters luau shower, but since your is a engagement party I dont think the flower pot bobbe pins would not be good.
I also made magnets with a pic of sis as kid in Hula outfit. You and finance can dress up in grass skirts and leis (whatever you bought) before had take pic and make a magnet with your pic on it. Or at oriental traders you can order keychains (flip flops or something and give them out)
We also bought a blow up cooler with a grass skirt and used it as the wishing well, but you could actually use it as a cooler for yours.
I also bought bamboo at pier one (was very cheap).
We made the invites on the computer too, did a hawaiian pink print on 5x7 card and did same for thank you. And put on the bottom Hawaiian Attire optional.

How about swizzle sticks. Pier One usually has them and often they are on sale. There summer stuff may be on sale now. We have some of their swizzle sticks with umbrellas on them. We also have cocktail napkins that match. If you can find them not too expensive I think it would be cute.
