Lyndsey Grace's Christening (with pics)
What should have been a special time in our lives turned into something ugly, and that is why I never posted about planning for Lyndsey's baptism.
Over a month ago, I decided to have the christening on Long Island. At first, I argued with my mother about this, because I knew if we had it on Long Island instead of up here in Rochester, we'd have to invite our LARGE extended families and it would turn into a huge event. I really wanted to keep it simple, but my mom said people would be insulted if we didn't have a party...blah blah blah. I agreed that it would be nice for everyone to come together to see my new daughter, because I live so far away. So, the planning began. Mike and I really wanted to have a *simple* barbeque in my parent's yard after the ceremony, but NO...it just had to be catered, the whole nine yards (according to my mom). Again, we wanted to keep it as simple as possible, partly due to the fact that I am not working and my husband is still a student....so we have NO income right now!
I sent out invitations (we invited 85 -- only close family, yikes) with an RSVP date of June 8, one week before the event. Well, to make a long story short, hardly anyone responded. No reason...just never called. We had only a couple of people tell us they were coming, and a couple said they couldn't make it. But the majority of our family never even bothered to call. I was extremely hurt by this....and I wasn't about to call everyone to ask if they were coming. So, after much thought, I decided to cancel the entire party. My mom and I called those who DID respond to tell them about the cancellation, and word spread fast. All of a sudden, only a couple of days before we were coming home to LI, we started getting calls to RSVP. I had to tell them why we cancelled...and then had to hear the excuses of why they never called. In my mind, it was just plain inconsiderate not to RSVP. We had needed an exact number because we had to tell the caterer how many people we needed food for. Ugh, I was annoyed, but accepted the fact that the people that really care about me are the ones who responded. (oh, and I received letters and emails of apology from other close family members who never called)
Lyndsey's christening was on Father's Day and the weather was gorgeous! My in-laws were LATE to the church and arrived after the priest had already begun. They were late to our wedding as well....how rude!! After I got over that, the ceremony was very nice. My sister and her fiance are the Godparents. Lyndsey slept the entire time, which was SOOO nice, as the other babies were screaming their heads off.
Afterwards, we (only immediate family) went out to a nice restaurant in Wantagh (Vagabondo's) and had a relaxing dinner. Later that night, we had some other relatives over for cake and coffee.
All in all, it was a beautiful day. I just wish it didn't cause me as much stress as it did.
