exactly, the post office does it by hand, and won't be put through the machine. When its put through the machine it might get messed up more, than if someone hand does it.

When it is time to mail your invitations, if you hand deliver them to your local post office window, you can request that they be hand canceled with a rubber stamp, instead of by a machine. It makes the front of the envelope look a lot more attractive without the large ugly black postal markings all over it. At our local post office they use a nice maroon colored ink for hand canceling.

I found this on one of the Invitation etiquette sites.
I know we tried to explain but its as simple as dropping it off. and I think you can do it your self but why if they would do it at no charge at your post office.

oh yeah duh through the machine at the post office the markings are black, im thinking about at work when its red lol...yeah i asked them about hand cancelling when i did eparty invites and the lady showed me and did it on an invite, it does look nice

Your welcome! Nope they don't charge extra, and I don't think you would need to watch them do it if you don't want too

No, they don't charge extra. Also, if you're nice and you have time, they will let you do it yourself. Like if you go to a small local office that's not too busy and you ask them for the stamp, they will let you stand there and stamp each one yourself. Some brides like to do this so they can be assured as to how it will look.
Keep in mind it will still definitely run through machines, just not the stamping ones.

I would love to tell you the difference I have NO idea, but my mother told me I better do it and so did the post office, so I just might as well do it lol.. They do it for you anyway, and it doesn't cost extra, so might as well!

did you send out your invitations already??

ohh noooo! lol, but I asked a few questions when I sent my STDs out... I'm thinking of sending them like late Oct., because I want them to have enough time to book rooms, but I'm still undecided lol

oh ok good! lol i am putting mine together in the next few weeks but i am not sending them out before nov 1 my RSVP is dec 10

a few people told me that the earlier you send them out the more likely you are NOT to get back the RSVPs bc people forget about them - so i figure 5 weeks is enough time for everyone to RSVP

Dont people just throw out the outside envelope away?? Whats the point really-to look nicer? How do you know along the way it wont get dirty, bent, etc.?
